MOG MOG

BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

Artist:
Album:
Track:
(149)

Though it goes uncredited in the album notes, this short dubbed up drum loop at the start fo 5 Man Army is brilliant when Massive Attack uses it and brilliant in it's original form. It is one of the reasons I was drawn to Blue Lines when it came out. For me this is a perfect example of why chasing samples is so rewarding. Just another way to find great music, and this original is a massive cut by an all time great. When I used to DJ at a bar in Chicago and play the original, the Massive Attack loving waitresses would always be fooled. But I'm sure the MOG is all over this.. 1.Can you name the original artist and song? 2.For Bonus points:Post the original song 3.For super duper extra credit: name the drummer on the original

Thus concludes this episode of Sample This..We will be back

Man, I remember when Soul II Soul first dropped. Folks we're going crazy 'bout the Brits. They, like, ruled the world for a minute.

Sounds to me like "I'm Glad You're Mine" by Al Green. Masterpiece. Drummer would be either Al Jackson or Howard Grimes, but from memory this is still pretty early 70s Al green so I'm going for AJ. Don't even know how to post the song here, but can I make up a point by referring y'all to Eric B & Rakims sample of this on "Mahogany" which I'm pretty sure predates the Massive Attack album....

The subbuteo reference was due to a lyric by the last MC in the massive song. It was a game where you played soccer aka football with little plastic men on a rectangle of green felt on your bedroom floor. Wiki has it covered.

Hey 2 points, that makes my day ;-) The Rakim ringtone is cool b/c of the "I'm sorry if you're in a rush, don't let me hold you up or intervene or interrupt ..." line... I cut that bit out and it still makes me laugh sometimes, when I hear it. I should post the ringtone on Multiply, a buck a download :P

(Has anybody dared to start a "Mog mp3 ringtone chart" yet???)

That sample quiz will kill me...

Which begs the question: What IS the most sampled drum beat of all time? "Funky Drummer" by Mr. Brown and his J.B.'s, or something else?

Hey Cody, what's with this the Brits "ruled the world for a minute"??? We just got tired of it after a few centuries and decided to give it back. Because we're nice that way.

Mike - the most sampled loop is The Melvins...and damned if I can't find the file with all the info and the YouTube link to a great video that takes you through 10 minutes of samples. Hip-Hop, drum 'n' bass...just about everything has used it.

OMG this is SO funny... who is that skinhead bar man???

And speaking of much used samples, here's the history of "The Amen Break"

Damn, we used to rule the world too. But at the end is all about picking on the french & the german. Excellent post (once more), Cody. That video was fucking hilarious, John.

Ahhh Oatmeal, again you bring good news and new to me news...The childrens board game from the lyrics of the massive song, nice one..1.5 points

Micki,That's diggity-dope, I think you should do the ringtone thing, I don't know from ringtones, over here. A question, what's the percentage of folks who are american hip hop fans in Germany? We know you are a rare bird, but how rare? Heggs also posted on the Amen break

Jonh-That vid is very funny. I don't know about the Melvin's break. That sounds like a joke. Without proof or the ability to hear the tone of your voice...Oh I get it you mean the Winston's-Amen Break. The "ruled the world for a minute" was meant in the musical, early 90's, sense.

Mike-I think it depends on the genre..If it is just Hip Hop, Funky drummer is close to the top. But the Amen Break is huge, and Flashlight is Huge, and Lou Donaldson has Ode to Billy Joe and Potbelly which are huge. Bring in Drum and bass and the Amen Break takes the cake. Overall as an artist, it's between JB and Gerge Clinton.

Rocket- You rule the world, right now!

I'm always calling the Winstons the Melvins. I have no idea why. Sorry.

That gentleman is The Pub Landlord. YouTube has loads of vid clips, most of them excellent and all with a common theme - the excellence of the British. Not.

A day late and a dollar short... I tracked this sample back to Al Green earlier this year and threw both tracks in a playlist for further analysis. JUST LAST NIGHT I lined up both tracks in Cool Edit Pro and put the Massive Attack on the Right channel and the Al Green on the Left.

To be precise (and because I'm a nerd), I think the sample is from the second bar of the beat before the music comes in on the Al Green track.
