As y'all may have noticed I tend to post about records by relating them to ME. I am a selfish, self absorbed MOGGER. I have wanted to post about Lil' Ed's new record, Rattleshake, for a long time, but I lacked the context to relate it to ME. Thankfully, this week a reason finally popped up. My son is obsessed with the song, Icicles in My Meatloaf. It all started this past week when my son particpated in 3 different performance assemblies for his school, his after school, and his kinder shule (The photo is a post show shot from his school assembly lip-synch of "Old time Rock and Roll"). The kid loves to be up on stage, singing, dancing, performing..he just digs it. I am so proud of my critter!A few days ago I posted a "mix":http://mog.com/Cody_B/blog_post/49288 I made for my dad's 67th birthday. As I was previewing the mix in the car (gotta have quality control before these go out) my son screamed, "turn it up dad", when Lil' Ed came on.He was air-guitaring, howlin', and rockin' to "Icicles in My Meatloaf." Then he gave his ultimate thumbs up for any song, "Put that song on again,Dad." Then he did something he's never done before in his 5 years, he said: "Can you put that song on a CD for me, dad." I told the boy he could have the CD that was playing. He was enthused. My wife and I were going out that night and I told the babysitter it would be OK if my son listened to his CD player when he went to bed. When we got back the sitter said he didn't fall asleep for about an hour after he went to bed. She said she went in to check on him and he looked asleep, so she went to take off his headphones, and he turned around, wide awake and glared at her. Up way past his bedtime, listening to music, that's my boy! I bet I know what he was rockin' in his box. This morning, he woke up, got dressed (upturned collar on his jacket and shades), and immeadiately went for his CD player. I could hear 'Icicles in My Meatloaf" and got an air guitar show all the way to the bagel shop and back.I am not going to bother giving you a review of this record, but I can tell you that my son really, really likes it.

  1. Spike says If he's normal, he'll break away around the age of eleven or twelve and find some other type of music to call his own, and he'll reject anything you suggest. Later on he'll drift back.

  2. angeldawn says Music brings the generations together. And I agree with Spike that the "gotta do my own thing" kicks in after a few years. If you can bite your tongue and let it run it's course then the kid does seem to emerge on the other side with a better sense of self + a more open mind to all music styles. Your tag "my kids favorite song, today" says it all. What will he like next week?

  3. Cody B says As long as he's interested in music, I will be happy. Spike and angeldawn the path you suggest is definitley the one I followed, and I am prepared. I'm practicing tounge-biting.

  4. mickimicki says Wait until he sings a song YOU'd been listening to while he didn't seem to pay attention... I nearly cried a while ago when out of the blue my son started singing "Más, que nada"... I was SO proud of his good taste... (*sniffing*)

  5. Cody B says @micki, that happens a lot and it is those moments that make my knees weak. It's a great ride, and mostly fun so far. I hope I remeber these things when he's a teenager annoying the crap out of me.

  7. Jonh Ingham says Up past his bedtime with the headphones on. I'm so jealous - my girl has yet to get there. :-( Still, she freaks out my friends with her choices - Dan Hicks, Sakamoto - so pride comes from a different direction. I'm planning that when she gets to the "my own music" phase I will professionally dislike her choices that I think are great. Just so she plays them to annoy me. BTW, your boys has a very cool guitar. A '65 blue Fender?
