YOU CAN'T NOT GET NO SATISFACTION

Labels with Style V.2

"Hi & Fly Records":http://www.hiflyrecords.comI guess it is the collector in me, but I love record labels that have their catalog numbers in single or double digits. Hi and Fly does it's crate digging from Paris, but most of their releases have a US connection. Their Playtime series offers mixes of Jazz Funk, Boogaloo, Reggae, and other groovy sounds. The Diggin' the Crates series looks at Sound Library music of the 70's. They also reissued the 2 original Lafayette Afro Rock Band LP's. These cats were a group of ex-pat Americans in Paris, soaking up Manu Dibango and Fela in the best way, and adding a little rock guitar to the mix. Recently, the label has started doing live recordings of classic soul singers, with Gwen McCrae the first out of the chute and a Lyn Collins coming in January. Their slogan is Good Music for Good People, but Quality over Quantity would work, too. With about 15 records in their catalog (most available on vinyl or CD), I always look forward to what they'll come up with next.

  2. sonical says And what do you recommend for a first CD to buy? I saw a greatest hits one but I usually like the less popular tunes that are deeper in the albums. Any suggestions where to start?

  3. Cody B says The good thing about the Lafayette Afro Rock Band Best of CD on Strut is that it has stuff from side projects like Ice and also includes previously unreleased material. That really should do you right, but go for the individual Afro Lafayette CD's (soul Makossa has the fewest tracks on the Best of) if you need more. They only made 3 records so the best of covers a lot of ground. I usually buy this type o' stuff from Dusty Groove, www.dustygroove.com One more thing, these guys are definately more toward the Manu Dibango/Soul Makossa sound and less Fela sounding..Especially in France it seems like a ton of these Afro-Rock bands we're cropping up in the early 70's. The French Comet label put out some nice comps..Racubah and Ouelele, that cover some more of these fusions that were happening back then and feature Manu Dibango, Tony Allen, and others. Finally, if you don't have it, there is a Tony Allen Live record on Comet, recorded in 2004 that is an absolute killer. It features older material, but mostly stuff from Black Voices (also Comet), which I think is the best post-Fela Afro Beat record I've ever heard. Ok, enuf from me already

  4. sonical says Thanks for the info. I do have one Tony Allen album which is called Psycho on da Bus. They played in LA about 5 years ago and I went because of the Fela connection but they blew me away. He had a French DJ playing and they created some REALLY funky music. I bought the CD that night. Everyone I play it for loves it. Happy NYE.
