MOG 4 and Out
Just finished my 4rth year at MOG.
MOG was my first excursion into social networking on the web and judging from my experience at other places, MOG's an outlier. MOG doesn't drill down into one topic or genre like so many fun (but limited) places. MOG isn't full of wack jobs (not counting me) or overrun by self promoters. For me, the concept of music geeks meeting to talk about music, pop culture, and other things, without excessive commercialism or boosterism or jerkism, was a revelation.
For four years, I don't know if I've gone 48 hours without looking at MOG. I'll admit I'm an obsessive, but I don't thnk I've ever obsessed over anything this much and for this long. David Hyman, you are a (beloved) evil genius. Maybe you knew this place would hit my sweet spot, maybe you didn't, but it did. Thanks to you and all those MOG workers who put this thing together.
The group of folks that are here now and those that have passed through the MOG gates, is what have made these 4 years fly by. Great folks, with great stories and songs to share...folks who also (and this is the rare thing) talked back to you.
That was the difference between this place and others I have visited..MOG had content I wanted, plus it had conversation. You can go a zillion places on the web for content, but it is a rare site that gives consistent feedback.
In a way, it's selfish to post and even selfisher to expect a respose, but from the beginning I never felt that way here. Posting my ideas, commenting on other folks ideas, and getting it all back with humor, wit, wisdom, and even a little love....a simple idea, but not often found (in my experience) on the net.
So thanks MOG and MOGGERS, this has been a lot of fun...but I'm done. MOG has helped me maintain sanity through a rough patch in my life and I am grateful to all. I debated whether or not I should even do an exit post, but WTF, I feel like I put a lot of myself in here, so I had to say something. My leaving doesn't have anything to do with MOG, MOGGERS, or MOG's various changes, I just have other stuff to do...and I will not half MOG.
I'm not gonna take down my posts or delete my profile (such as it is). Hell I'm not even gonna say I won't log in anymore, but I will not put up any new posts or make any more comments after this post runs for a bit. (final tally-557 posts,13,909+ comments).
I will, over the next couple of weeks, slide some of my posts over to, Funk Or Die, to build an archive and try my hand at blogging. Bookmark, follow, or whatever folks do over there.
I love my stats, so I'll also stay active at Last.fm
I also do mixes (along with a bunch of MOGGERS and lala'ers) at 8tracks
I hate it but I'm at Facebook too
Contact me at one of those spots if you want to stay in touch.
I can't thank you all enough.

Alas, I completely understand. See ya on FB, and hit me up when you're on last.fm next, won'tcha?
You will be missed. Fond farewell and Aloha.
Man. Code, say it ain't so! I mean, I'm not on here that much anymore myself, but it does me good to know you're out there, MOGging it up! I bought a bunch of records on your say so, and you never let me down once. Your posts are a model of insight and pith, and will be sorely missed, I'm sure. Thanks for all the knowledge bro, and stay funky.
Sad to see you go, dude
I'm not done with you Cody. You've been a major draw to the Mog community for me that led to an extended family i've experienced online that was unchartered territory i never expected to enter and i thank you.
i hope your playlists remain intact because i enjoy them. i hope to read your old posts and new ones at "Funk or Die" or wherever they end up because i've always enjoyed your knowledge, viewpoints and yes, humor.
and i hope you can't totally kick this habit and still show face here periodically. that may be selfish, but consider it a request.
thanks for everything.

You'll be painfully missed, C.
You gave good MOG.
Many salutes and I'll see you on Facebook (I used to hate it to, but it's nice to keep in contact with people and catch up).
xxx
I always enjoyed what you did and will miss your input and knowledge. happy trails
Oh jeez, I'm no good at good byes....I'm gonna miss you around here....Four years is a long time and as long as I've been here I could always count on your posts to put the funk in my day... I'll check you out on Funk or Die, and FB. Keep on rockin' in the free world! Hasta La Proxima....XXX OOO
you'll be back
Swanky and very fitting outro cut, breau. I'm likin' the looks of "Funk or Die." Consider it a compliment that it's now lodged on my oft-tapped "Music" bookmarks menu.
Noooooooooooooo! MOG without your posts will be a very different place. This decision bums me out Cody, you're MOGs resident historian for music I dig. Your old posts are there but I will truely miss your new comments, events, playlists, and polls.
Hey Cody,
I checked out a long time ago and have never mustered a full return (though I use the streaming service all the time) ... like you said, I have other things going on. But I often returned to peruse your posts, even if I stopped commenting.
I thought a long time ago that you should be running your own blog and just cross posting here. You will definitely get the traffic ... over time. We're connected in some of those other places ... so if you are ever again out my way, definitely look me up again!
Aw, Cody...
You are by far one of my favorite members on this site. I'll miss your incredibly detailed posts and playlists, you truly were a genius with those. I hope you won't go for good, but I understand. "Life happens when you're busy making other plans" and all that. I'm glad you're in a better place than when you started. Thanks for educating me for the past four years, and I'll add you on facebook.
Stay funky, my friend.
There is nothing like a "dramatic goodbye" ;-)
I tend to agree with rummy that "you'll be back."
It is my contention that all "social networking" is (essentially) the same.
You say you want "try my hand at blogging" - um, this is the perfect place for that.
You are aware of the MMN aren't you?
Cheers.
DC
As usual, you sum it up succinctly, Professor Cody. And better to have an official exit (rather than wussy, half-a**ed one, like mine). Thanks for keeping the "unity" in "community" - and the "unk!" in "funk!" We all know a voice like yours, with a passion for music and intelligent (well, ok and sometimes goofy) discourse cannot remain silent. We'll see ya on the internet tubes, my friend. Thanks for so many good Moggy years of keeping the musical fire burning. Cheers!
You'll be missed, but I'll catch ya on Last.FM and FB...peace!
:-)
"I don't thnk I've ever obsessed over anything this much and for this long"
yeah. damn, man, I think I almost have tears from reading this. Who could deny the value of your contributions here? We don't run across much magic in the day-to-day, but - for a time - MOG was truely that. Your funk tenure towers high, and I'll track you down somewhere, sometime. May only the best befall you and yours in the meantime. peace
You Mogged good. I will look to other outlets for your name and posts. Adios.
Dam shame but thanks for being here at all and all the best
cody, you are one of the greats. and its been a pleasure to get to know you over the past few years. your passion and knowledge will surely be missed round these parts. take care ol trusted.
Aw man...that sucks. Really very depressing. As with you, this was my first foray into social networking. I never much cared to do it before, but one thing I love is music. Talking to people talking about music ain't so bad. There's some great folks on here. I've been educated, humbled, tickled, surprised, saddened, and all-around hipped by MOG and I have to say that a lot of that had to do with what you laid down. As others have said, I'm happy for you, sounds like things are looking up and that's great. I can relate as this is an outlet for me. So thanks for pouring your heart into 4 years of Mog and you'll be missed. Best of luck Cody.
Cody, I always looked forward to your posts. Through your posts I've found some great new music and cool resources. Thanks, and best wishes.
Sush as it is in a dynamic universe, change must happen, resistence only leads to destruction.
I've only been here a few months but always looked forward to your posts. As i posted the other day, i can never go wrong following your musical directions.
Keep walking that funky path brother, all ya gotta do is move dem feet.
Dude. . . no words! Hate when people leave here. As Inrumford saidm you'll be back! Cya on FB
You'll surely be missed. You are one of the key souls of MOG. I'll try to follow you elsewhere.
Thanks for all the posts and all the comments.
Damn, Cody, I will miss your posts and the knowledge and fun (and of course music) that came along with them.
I do hear what you're saying, though. I'm at Last.fm but NOT Facebook and never will be. Give me a shout sometime.
Good Luck in all, Cody.
Damn dude......WTF?
This is definitely the end of an era. There is no way I can repay the friendship & delightfully contrarian foil you so often provided. Your knowledge of the Funk...from the roots to the current blossoms...is astounding & a little spooky. I will miss you. The MOG is the lesser for your absence. I'm happy to have actually shook your hand...(I haven't washed it since).
Maybe we'll meet for Tea
Shit, goddamn, get off your ass & jam!!!
seriously give me a shout sometime
MOG won't be MOG if you don't just make this a short sojourn instead of a goodbye. If it is a goodbye, then I'll check you at some of those other sites. I am established on 3 out of 4 of them.
Leave the notifs on and check out our craziness from time to time. You can laugh at us and shake your head at our nuttiness without commenting. Sometimes it's fun to stay stealth and just observe.
Have fun at your new blog- and like Dave said, join the MMN. Most of them do not comment, so it's the best of both worlds. You can stay on MOG without any of the work to be there.
Take Care!
Shut the funk up and other puneous funkerisms.
Will be sure to check out yer new digs.
I thought you couldn't quit me?!?
As you once said to me on LastFM...I understand...
Good bye brother & I'll hopefully see you, so to speak, on the other side. Such are the way things are.
Cody, I can't fault your decision, I guess, but like others before me, I can say I hope this just turns out to be a short vacation. MOG really will be the lesser for your absence, and even though I can hit you up on FB or other places, it's just not the same, ya know?
All I can say is thanks for all you have done over the past 4 years to make MOG a home away from home, so to speak. your knowledge of all things funk, plus everything else you've got stored in your brain, is legendary and will be missed.
Viking out.
Robert Ward -Your Love Is Amazing
Thank you all for the kind words.
I considered what Dave and Rex said, ie, the MMN, but I'm gonna pass for now. Lord knows it'll be hard to get used to writing for something less than a built in audience, active audience, but I need to do it that way.
I do disagree with Dave about all social networks being the same. They may act the same or follow the same traffic patterns over time and may be subject to the good ol phrase, "you get out of it, what you put into it," but for me, MOG was always very different.
I got much more out of MOG than I ever put in!
Hours and hous of entertainment, quality information about music, a few real live human friends, and a ton of e-friends.
I also got the chance to improve my writing by reading great posts and generating a few of my own. I didn't really have any expectations when I joined, but I most definitely got what I needed. Hopefully, I gave something back.
After this experience (which I don't see being reconstituted somewhere else..MOG came at the right time and we're all a little more jaded about sharing on line now), I totally believe in the idea that blogs are not a problem, but one of the solutions to the music biz woes.
But, I digress from the point I was making, that MOG is different from other places (for me anyway), because I feel like we built this trust with each other. A situation where every post, that every active member made was considered.
It didn't always mean a ton of comments, but (as the stats bear out), if you wrote, at the very least you got read. We helped build a truly interactive site focused on music..something we didn't even know we wanted, but found out, that we craved.
Part of what made it work was the obsessiveness that many of us have and our willingness to spend vast (especially in todays world) amounts of time here. At least from my POV, that isn't blogging, that's MOGGING.That's why I don't want to be a blog on MOG.
Call it a quid pro quo, call it a trust, call it what you will, the idea of putting a blog post here and not "working" the comment section would be wrong. Just as the idea of only working my posts would be wrong...maybe wrong isn't a perfect choice of words..but dealing only with "my" posts (whether as a MOGGER or an MMN'er), to me, is not MOGGING. If I'm not all in, it doesn't feel right for me..I've tried toning it down, or full blown hiatuses (or is it hiatii) in the past, and I came right back to full tilt MOGGING.
I still want to write about music, but I'd like to do it at my leisure (unless I'm getting paid ), without any (admittedly self made) pressure. That's why I say this is a personal thing. I've tried and I just can't Half-MOG. uknowhatimsayin'
<3 That's all. See you on the other side, for now:)
Farewel, peace love and good vibes for one of the best things on MOG. Hope you check in from time to time. Your posts have been enlightening and I will miss seeing them.
Cody, I'm not surprised. The old MOG is breathing its last. I only check out postings from Trusteds, and that's turned into a one-page daily list. Still, I can't stop checking it out. I AM glad that we've met up a time or two and hope that can continue. Maybe if you make it to Philly one of these weekends you can see Ivylander and me playing our little middle-aged hearts out. (shameless personal plug: www.MySpace.com/ConsentingAdultsBand will always have our schedule).
You are among the most erudite nice guys on MOG. Go in peace, see ya around here occasionally?
Cody, thanks for all your great posts. (for me) You the MOG!
I could protest and tell you not to leave, but I feel we're to inevitably linked, because of Mog. I know I'll be in contact with you in some digital form or incarnation, so I'm not worried. Congrats on your 4th, and here's to new digital forms and insite from the most one of the most knowledgable cats I know! The Funk is dead, Long live the Funk!
Cheers, mate! Be safe
Cody...
i think you know how i feel. i am choosing to celebrate (and support) your new blog. i shall keep seeing/reading you around.
"I don't want to be a blog on MOG." ...in my own little way, i get it.
Well,,,this is a significant step. I've been quiet due to far too much work for a healthy human, but I've continued to enjoy reading and scanning your posts. If ever a university needed a Professor of Funk in their music dept., you are the man. You've opened my eyes and ears to an amazing amount of music and thoughts - thank you so much.
Do let us all know where you next lay your thoughts and sounds for the world to hear.
im a little late here..but have i missed it or has the funk world cup not yet been decided? at least throw me a comment every quarter or something..
Thanks for all the great posts man, and thank god you didn't delete your account. So many albums I have are because of you, thanks man
Cody, you've loomed large on my MOG horizon. We've been "in rapport" often over the years. With the absence of your presence, I guess my best antidote to this new deprivation is to explore the posts and playlists of yours that somehow slipped by me, as this one seems to have done until today. See you!
Fare well, Cody!
Catch you on the rebound!
