FF:Funky Freakout: A Six Pack Of Cold Duck Funk

Album:Super Cool California Soul 2

Track:I Have Changed...(1)

Come on in, its Friday...I just cashed my check and got myself a bottle and some paper cups..pull up a chair. We might get a party out of this.
First up is a cut from San Francisco's HP Riot, from the Luv n'Haight comp, Super Cool California Soul 2. The liners point out that HP=Hunter's Point, a tough dockside neighborhood in SF. Some soulful vocals in I Have Changed, are backed by some serious horn driven funk. A neighborhood band for sure, but tight enough to open for folks like Friends Of Distinction at a Reno casino. The Hunters Point riots of '66 brought these folks together, but they didn't get a lot of love in their hood, so they took off for Canada, and kept it together til they split in the early 80's.

Yo, don't bogart that bottle, I was just going up to change the record..(BTW, you can refill your music in comments). Another region brings us our next track, What We Need Is Harmony by a Memphis/Muscle Shoals crew called Brothers Unlimited. The previously unheard of (by me) label Fallout dug up this piece of "real fine,funky,hard-driving,up-tempo,contemporary,down-home,nitty-gritty solid soul," but I just bought it for the cover...It's pretty cool overall, but really for collectors only..originally released in 1970.

Brothers Unlimited had a few touches of politics, but the next record...man, I'll kick in for another bottle, but you've got to go get it...Young Disciples Inc doing Crumbs from the Table, is part of a local movement. Pulled from the latest genius release in Numero Group's eccentric Soul Series: The Young Disciples chronicles the releases of the East St. Louis label/rec center/youth program/recording studio, Yodi Enterprises.

The story of Allan "Dealth" Merry is about a local cat who returned home after a decent career in the music biz to help out in his troubled E. Saint Louis community. He helped by teaching music, setting up a studio, schooling bands how to play and how to act..A community organizer, who got things done, and brought a lot of pride and hope to the place he lived. Great story and excellent tuneage from the always incredible Numero Records team.
Whoa, I'm gettin' a little drunk on the funk..seein' things I shouldn't be seein', like this..

Reissued recently by Wounded Bird, but originally a 1976 Columbia release, Ramsey Lewis goes all Ohio Players on us in Aufu Oodo, from his Salongo record. This is not the "In Crowd" Ramsey, this is straight up funk..and now, I'm really drunk.

I'm starting to look like that dude in the lower right hand corner about now, and as I stumble up to the box, all I can think to play is LARB's Dr. Beezer (Soul Frankenstein). And why the hell shouldn't I play some franco-afro-american funk..is halloween passed already.
I'm gettin' kinda tired..I think I better chill. And what better way to drift off to sleep than with some sitar soul. Sometime in the late 60's, what you think I can remember dates in my condition, funk/soul/blues maestro Johnny Guitar Watson hooked up with blues belter Larry Williams for an LP backed by none other than Cali studio rockers Kaleidescope. Why, I'm not sure..WTF, yes, but so what. I found the tune on the great Office Naps blog, but you can also find it here:

Please look in comments for all the rest of the music..I gotta go to bed.
Happy Friday. Mix available here...◄

And how the hell do you make the mog button so freaking big?
Know that just might make me pleased to use that crap red button.
Funny thing Annie..It isn't big for me in Firefox..I don't understand it..and I'm drunk. Six songs in a post while high is no gimmie technically. especially for a junior luddite such as myself.
Are you kidding? On my screen that button is 4 1/2" wide (yes I pulled out my 3 sided ruler to measure...)
But it's making me smile...the thought of you all drunk and posting...love it.
You have pleased me much today....good boy.

Hey Dz,
When i was in High School the first thing I wanted to learn in French Class was how to say Mad Dog 20/20 in French..I went with Chein Chaud Vingt-Vingt (I think that's hot dog 20 20, but I don't speak French very well)..
Anyway, good to see ya in da club, such as it is..
I..can..follow..that..one..up
We are truly testing the limits of browsers everywhere, and no I will down tie in Kool and the Gang..though i'm tempted..Diggin the percussions here and the little horn in the back and the sonic mischief in general..I'm actually getting hungry now. Which reminds me of I Am, which reminds me of Gyros..
Which reminds me of Lamb(s Bread) -Sylford Walker

Oww I missed the funky drogging!
DEAR LORD THOSE BUTTONS ARE UNBELIEVABLE!
I'd love to chat, but now I gotta clean up this mess..I guess i need to upload in IE..cause in firefox they are normal size..or perhaps my eyes deceive me.
Nah, don't clean up. They are very entertaining to look at :)
and..courtesy..of..you..kind..sir.......
Nice,DZ..A fitting close to a thread that reminded me of the olden days 6 months ago. Thanks All.
BTW,DZ...you are killing me with those ellipses...Whether its a tribute or you are busting my chops or its the international symbol of drogging..or a little of all three, it is making me laugh.
There is some seriously nasty liquor in this thread, too. Love it.
God I LOVE your posts and the thread that develops - this is habit forming!
I haven't had this much fun since my hampster died (don't ask)
Thanks Rummy..just one question..was the hampster named schloopy? Please don't answer if its too much to talk about at this time..I totally understand.
Cody, I think you may have set a record for the most tunes per MOG post, including those in others' comments. Your scroll oval is almost a circle (envy, envy!) It's hard to pick my favorite track, but it might just be the first half of Ramsey Lewis's "Aufu Oodo."
Thanks Charles..It was kinda fun to do a drunken party in digest form. Glad you made it. I put 12 tunes in myself..6 for Nick..and 1 for Chris..19 tunes. I'll have to check the archives. My 12 are posted on the darkside.
and how have you changed? it's my Thursday and that ain't ever early for Cody-style funk. all these choons will play until my noontime, thanks.
it's too bad i missed the partay but here i am, drinking bottle leftovers. hey, hard times, people.
also, you did say "cheers to the broke folks" so cheers right back atcha!
LMI, Boone's! ahahahahahah. oh god, i just got a glimpse of my near future...
Next week--Funky Lifestyles of The Poor and Indigent..with Joe from Lehman bros.
hahahahah. you funny person. in another life, the name "Lehman Bros." could've been two blind blues brothers in raggedy clothes, instead we get the bankrupt version, sigh.
i am playing me LARB's Heels and Soles in anticipation of your Poor and Indigent FF. (8
I can't believe I've missed the party once again. Where did everybody go? Well at least, the music is still here for me to listen to... Truly intoxicating!!! -- Thanks mucho, Cody
Hey, Bartleby..for you I'll reopen the bar..Martini?
