MOG History 101:Let's Review
-
Artist:
A little reading and writing music from NOW.
One constant of MOG is that there are always new folks coming aboard. Except for the charter members from '06, we arrived here newbies and found the music world we were looking for. We found folks scarily (and inticingly) informed, witty and all about the music. Once you decided to start posting and commenting though, this place became a lot more than music. Live friendships have been made from the words and music in these posts.
Even posts that start out about music can turn into something completely different. Though I like a well selected tune and back story, it is often the thread that comes after the music that makes a post memorable.
I hope some of the newer folks on MOG will jump in to some of these threads and get busy. You will be welcome, I guarantee. That's how this MOG rolls.
So, Moggers, do you have a favorite post (that you started) that turned into something big?
Check Out Shop Therapy:

Unfortunately the video in the post is no longer available, but if you read the thread you'll see it doesn't really matter, plus I added the audio.

Your link doesn't work for me, love :(
Cody was too generous and doubled his URL. Try this one: http://mog.com/Cody_B/blog_post/120261
Bummer... don't work for me either... I think I remember that one though
Thank you Bart..I fixed the post regular, too. So, show me yours y'all.
That is definitely one of my favorites - no bout adout it !!!
I don't think I've managed to post anything which gave way to whole new discussion on music or other topics. I'm not what you may call an instigator. (Not yet)
Interesting idea for a post... you've sent me flicking through my own MOGarchive, but I'm not sure I have the energy for all gasp 44 pages.. so I'll jsut say my greatest hit is probably this
Oh please, Bartleby. Sometimes you are so coy.. I haven't had this many technical problems with a post since....last week. All my fault though. Don't make me go back and select one for you.
That's what I'm talking about Detective Joxley. Nice one.
Please bring me your Greatest Hits.
I cant remember any certain posts I made that were big hits. There must be one or 2 in my archives. But that was def a most excellent one Code. Nuff respect.
Thanks :)
So you want derailed posts, eh? Most of my posts get derailed. You can see the one I made today as a random example, or yesterday's, when I wanted to test something and ended up popping Arctic Monkeys' cherries ;)
This post makes me wish we could archive our posts, like, have just the title of a post when we go through our MOG's pages.
I do that manually Anna, cause I'm always referring back to them for one thing or another. Bit it it was a widget, where you could click on your own post and auto archive, that would be sweet.
Pete, I was thinking one of your Italian Cinema posts would be a in that category.
I gotta find it. Im too lazy to look right now tho.
Your Shop Therapy certainly veers this way and that like the proverbial rollerskating drunk on a hillside highway. When I see magnificent unwieldy threads like that I think, "HTF?" The first post I had with more than just my mother commenting was probably "I Blame The English":http://mog.com/FluxCapacitor/blog/122631 (yep, I archive for easy access, too) My threads never go off-topic, though, I do that in the posts themselves. Also, there was a classic thread recently about the origins of reggae. I really wish I'd instigated that one...
I don't have a specific post in mind, more a trend. Two trends, actually, both of which grow out of my weekly Random Ten posts. First, someone always seems to post interesting anecdotes in the comments about the music and the times. Second, it's kinda commonplace to read "I didn't think there were any good songs from that year, but I was wrong." The latter is true for older stuff and newer ... I guess young'uns are surprised to find that there were good songs in 1959, and geezers are surprised to find that there were good songs in 1999.
I'm just sorry I didn't actually respond to the actual post. That was a sweet looking box set and a great post.
I thought I did reply to it. But I guess I didnt.
Thanks for this little trip down memory lane! Going through my pages there were three posts that sort of stood out. They didn't necessarily launch a kajillion comments, but they all had interesting discussions afterwards, funny things happened, garnered me a lot of trusteds, whatever.
1) http://mog.com/Groon/blog_post/115646#comments --one of my posts of just random thoughts.
2) http://mog.com/Groon/blog_post/112952#comments --A rebuttal I made to then unknown to me Dachmo's post about South Carolina.
3) http://mog.com/Groon/blog_post/86701 --the first post I made that made it in the MOG Gazette! This was about my problems with the "accepted" view of the origin of Punk.
My memory is so bad that I can't remember what rang people's bells, but I'm nearly always surprised by the topics that do explode. I did one on Madonna about a year ago that I tossed off in about 10 minutes. I couldn't believe how many people had an opinion about her. Anyways, I'm a forward looking man. I only look over my back to see who's pursuing me.
Yeah that was a fun thread..... which kicked off this post:
http://mog.com/Dzendvokh/blog_post/120278
which prompted Anna to provide a link for this post:

And I realized I never commented on your original post either... blame it on Contra.
1- i enjoyed reading that the second time around. 2- i love the subject of this post a whole lot. 3- i honestly don't know how to keep a conversation going, plus due to the time difference, i always miss my own party, but if i find any "hit" i promise to get my ass back here and tell. (:
I love all my babies. I got about 58 pages to go through though. I really loved that post I did where I asked people to help me make a mix tape for my wife after she lost her job http://mog.com/fistula_spume/blog_post/89160. I also loved my Something You Don't Know About Me post http://mog.com/fistula_spume/blog_post/75218. My 1 Year post was really fun http://mog.com/fistula_spume/blog_post/87160. Couple of days til that 2 year post!!! Does that make me an oldbie?
Prolly one of my most favorites by another Mogger was Sethpian's World Most Expensive Bat Mitzvah http://mog.com/Sethpian/blog_post/7493 which is jsut one of the best stories evah. It even made it to Digg's front page and got a ton of votes.
Looks like it's time to compile one of these:
Best Mogmerican Music Blogging
Look for the upcoming post, and keep submitting your faves!
@flux- you have so many great ones it must be hard to choose..the Ms. Murphy one you picked is smashing.
@masoo- those 10 tunes certainly leave a lot of wiggle room for folks to come up with something. Random 10 is a Friday must.
@Groon- Great picks man. Exactly what I'm looking for here. An archive of great posts.
@Jonh- I'm doing it for the young ones. And you are right..some of the simplest posts bring 'em out of the woodwork. â–ºHere's one of yours
@dz- I remember when you used to watch us East coasters babble long into the night with your 3 hour lag coherance.
@oh please, woman..your multi song/pictured posts send people off to all types of places.
@Sam- Oh My God, I'd never seen that Bat Mitzvah thread..wow, and I can't believe I missed the something I don't know about you.
@contra- Yes. A proper archive is in order.
That Bat Mitzvah post I think is definitely recommend reading for all Moggers. It was posted in 8/06 so a lot of people probably missed out on it.
Props to Andrea for one of my all time favorite posts:
http://mog.com/bloodtea/blog_post/120885
The much missed Daniel "Soulrocket" was always good for a convoluted and goofy discussion.
So true Sam..It's funny how so few people reacted to the incredible ostentaciousness happening there. Kinda sick. I've been to the Rainbow Room though..it is very cool.
Yes Dz..the MOGlove post to end all posts.
i think this one fits the bill....

Oh yeah..I remember that one. I went over to the dark side to get pimp's attention. I knew he'd want to say something..
There's also these classic gems http://mog.com/posts/all/all/all/all/most_discussed/all
Hey Cody! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I remember reading your Therapy session after the freshness of it! And all of the other links are really great to see again! Contra's got a fantastic idea too, how exciting!
Here's a couple of my personal fav's and this is because of the comments not because of the crap I put in there to begin with. : )

Those were some excellent jump off's Sunny (and the lettter that will not be mentioned).
And Sam brings to light the champs..the Posts For The Ages!
I love those like Sunny's that bring out long, long comments from folks.
Thanks Cody! I definitely am more thrilled to see people get involved. I'm trying to think of my favorite from Lizzie....?
She is one of the queens of the jump off.
interesting post Cody, I tend not to be so controversial as some so I am lucky to have a handful of responses.I didn't start posting until less than year ago even though I have been on MOG since dec 06 so I still consider myself a novice. However, the curious thing is that some of those posts have 50 or more song plays and only a few comments, something I didn't notice before.
I remember this one, all I did wast post a list I had seen on the net. I was getting comments on it weeks after I had made the post.
http://mog.com/Rawkkiddo/blog_post/49670
This is my favorite. Not a ton of comments and not that many moggers involved, but it turned out swell
http://mog.com/brand_X/blog_post/125841
Cody, this is a great idea for a post. It got me to look through mine, which wasn't too hard because they're all listed on a widget with their links, but none of them had tons of comments or went off-topic very far. But it was fun noticing who was commenting back then, many of them unknown by me at the time but who since have become online friends.
Hey Cody,
Well, reviewing a couple years worth of posting periodically, I came up with this:
http://mog.com/RobP/blog_post/18222
It got the most comments, and I think it raises a few points about what's good about Mog and what's bad about how some people react to it. It was posted at a time when some people I really liked here were leaving or considering leaving; as that's going on again now, albeit for different reasons, it seems like a decent time to bring it back up.
I still think my best music post was my first one here, which was about Sonny Sharrock, and which was posted at a time when I really didn't know much about Mog and Mog really didn't know much about itself - everything was less defined, my family was out of town and I had a lot of time to put together a music specific post, and I wish I had done more of those as in depth as I went with that one. Other people have done a better job of that than I have, and I definitely include you in that.
But I think the post I mention above is most Mog community specific, and some of my best friends here are people who responded to that post. Bawston Sean - anyone heard from Bawston Sean? God I liked that guy.
Enough self-indulgence for now, although I assure you I'll get back to it, thanks for the post, Cody; I think I've read Joxley's before, the rest of these are probably new adventures.
Cheers.
This post must have inspired many of you to realize how many old posts by others are still worth seeking out, and hold up after their parade has gone by. I encourage people to comment on them if you have the urge to. There is so much great music, insightful opinion and witty dialogue in them.
Agreed to that Spike. I really enjoy going back to older posts. Take fer instance all the Jonh Ingham Rock Shrines..Those are long posts and I know I didn't read 'em all the first time and they are quite good.
That Tracey Nelson post you did..that was an excellent thread full of on the spot type insight only a few can give. Priceless.
@RobP- what a steady force you've been for the duration..thanks for that link.
@cp-It doesn't have to be a 50 comment post to be good. Some of those Detroit posts you've done were real eye openers.
@rawk- Yeah, I was certainly excitable back then. Nice one. You are one of the all time great fire starters round here. You were like, "oh let me throw up this little list" and bam..the mog got its panties in a bunch. But, I have a sneaking suspicion you knew that would happen.
@brandx- That was dope and different. Thanks for that. Highly recommended.
Steady? A force? Maybe I should have linked my posts about cheese and heroin.
But thanks, Cody. I really believe this can be a great place, and I've known some great people who've passed through here and others who've left and come back, others who've just left. It works for different people for different amounts of time and I figure anything I get here is more than I would've gotten without here.
I've been on Mog close to 2 years and I haven't met anyone from here yet, but there have been numerous emails and packages and damn, it's hard to find music nuts in real life I can fit into my schedule. I need places like this - I walked into the new nearby Book & Music Chainstore the other day looking for the Justin Broadrick/Jarboe cd and realized after not finding it that they didn't even have a Jesu section. And realized after that that damn few people short of my Mog friends would have a fucking clue what I was talking about.
I like a lot of different types of music so there are a lot of things on Mog I find interesting. My guess, Cody, is that my last.fm profile would show our music compatibility as low, but that's based on what I've played on my pc in the last couple of months, and I know we like a lot of the same stuff, but I can go months without playing any funk or soul on my pc (not the only place I listen to music). And I miss a lot of your posts because hell, I miss a lot of everyone's posts, if one looks interesting when I'm not busy I check it out.
When I first came to Mog I was looking for a music site. I didn't know what I would find, and the social aspect was a pleasant surprise. If I did a Mog history it would be personal and it would be a list of names. I'm still in contact with a lot of those people, whether or not they're still here. And I've got a decent idea about most of their musical tastes, which in a lot of cases differ significantly from mine. There's also a bunch of people I've lost touch with completely who've affected me while they were here.
I think Mog 101 would be highly personal for any one person who wrote it, and I think that's where Mog works best. Individuals interacting - that's damnear contrapuntal, like a New Orleans rhythm section. We may not all have that good a rhythm, but sometimes together we do.
Now, this is a cool post and engaging thread. Couldn't single out any of mine, but I'm proud of the "Pilgrimages" one that, with Jonh's subsequent Rock Shrines posts, stimulated a lot of MOGger response. A few of my Los Angeles and New Orleans posts were fun to write and piqued a few readers. And my recent "Why We MOG" essay seemed to strike a chord with people.
Well said. Maybe I wasn't so far from the truth Steady RobP.
From NOLA to LA and from Philly to the Bay, Monsieur Knife always has something cool to say.
Be sure to check out the masterly, Paganini-esque variation on this greatest hits theme by contrabandwidth
Dude that Rawkkiddo post was pretty sweet. I remember that one. He had a few older posts that were pretty sweet too. I seem to remember butts. Michelle has had some cool ones too although my brain has left me. Probably because I'm starting a badass 4 day week end! Praise Ja!
I had a review of the Roots I liked. It was good.
Charter.
Good post. I like it.
I have a handful of standouts. Honorable mention goes to a review of the Who's live fan club album. I remember thinking at the time that if Jonh Ingham says he likes the review I'll have felt I did a good job. And he did.
I wrote a review of the REM live rehearsals here in Dublin that got mentioned on the REM official site, the USA Today site, and earned me a 'Thanks!' e-mail from their manager. Big day for me. Here it is...
http://mog.com/John_Madden/blog_post/91406
And then there's these two.
http://mog.com/John_Madden/blog_post/145511
http://mog.com/John_Madden/blog_post/133598
(The second one seems to have since been truncated - I might try and find it to repost. Anyway - it was a review of my musical 2007.)
There's a few non-moggers read my posts, thanks to some shameless self-promotion. These got me a ton of e-mails, and earned me some 'I Likes' from StumbleUpon. I love it when I can strike a chord with the denizens of MOG, but it's nice every once in a while to cross over to the big bad outside world.
My favorite post all-time? Heh, that's easy enough: http://mog.com/chucky/blog_post/36853. There's enough meat on those comments to keep me giggling almost 18 months later.
As for my own, I'm drawing a blank.
Where be chucky? She's missed for sure.
Dunno. :(
