WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Af-Reak Tuesday:How the most ancient of traditions do distortion

Posted about 1 year ago

Boy, I sure hope this theme catches on. African Music is the root (along with Cuban Music) of everything Zarpex hates, but more importantly it is strongly linked to everything he loves. Plus I have a whole lot to learn. Zarpex's mortal enemy Baudolino was the first to post the Western Saharan based, Group Doueh, but I had learned of them from Jen and Michael (YoungMossTongue). Upon hearing the distorto-guitar of Group Doueh my mind clicked over to Konono No.1, the over amped home made thumb piano guys from Congo. My first thought was that these two bands should go on tour. I can just see this stuff, with a proper light show, blowing minds on multiple continents. What say you? Afrique Tuesday? Ivy did it. Show us yours..

  2. mullytron says Yeah MAN! Those guys are NUTS. We did a gig with them in Philly at the World Cafe, ask Nicki, she was there... Konono #1 are like the Hendrix, the Herbie Hancock, and the MC5 of mbira, all at once. What a sound, 3 and 4 dudes thumbing it old skool, thru way-fuzzy amps, and with ladies dancin', got to love it...

  10. Cody B says I'll say one thing..nowadays when I see a turban and an electric guitar I get a little excited. Thank You Michael..that kind of instant gratification is a scary and beautiful thing. Glad to here it is so, consumer x. Now are you about to jump into the Tuesday fray..even if its Wednesday. Sam, check out he link if you haven't already to see more of their set up. They make Tom Waits' work with car parts seems like Matchbox material.

Or use some major bandwidth, 'cause there's an entire universe of diverse sounds comin' from across the pond and south. ► "check Awesome Tapes From Africa for some starters":http://awesometapesfromafrica.blogspot.com/ ◄

  16. Bartleby says Between Ivy, Dzend' you and consumerx, I think my Tuesdays are going to be dressed in beautifully coloured boubous (or bubus, whichever spelling you prefer). Two lovely tracks you've offered us. Speaking of "unusual" instrument, the ikembé has always fascinated me with its "recycled" ingenuity. Many thanks indeed for posting these two gems and for the links also.

  17. Cody B says My pleasure Bartleby, I hope it lasts. Just got this from Awesome Tapes..lemme study on it. It looks very, very good.

  18. CeeOhBee says Man, I'll never be able to thank you for how much your posts teach me. You posted the Congotronics album in response to something I posted many moons ago (under my other alias) and I had the CD rush delivered to me, I loved it so much. I can tell I'm in trouble again on EVERY TUESDAY. Kutesa Kwa Zamu is amazing! note to self: plant money tree STAT.

  19. Bartleby says You can trust the Belgian to know a thing or two about the music of their former colonies -- I'm not saying the Belgium was the most exemplary country when they colonised Congo and other parts of Africa but there's a huge community of true "Africanists" who have a genuine love for African culture. Boubou time!!!

  21. contrabandwidth says African Music is the root (along with Cuban Music) of everything Zarpex hates That made me laugh, hard. I'm really enjoying this theme as well. There been some rather large artists like Fela Kuti, I've always been meaning to listen too, but just haven't gotten the chance.

  22. CeeOhBee says I missed you too, Cody, my man. Keep my fixes a comin' and I'll try not to lurk about your house, drooling and flinching and so on and so forth. Incidentally, can African Tuesday bleed into Wednesday a little? Got another post in you, Cody? (man, Bartleby probably won't catch this comment, but I just re-read Heart of Darkness . . . Belgian Congo action, eeeeek!)

  23. Cody B says Boubou time, scary as this sounds, kinda reminds me of hammer time in the poofy pants department.. COB, it seems like we have definitely bled over. Let It Bleed. 24. CeeOhBee says Oooh, sweet!! This is great. Seems like African Tues can bleed all the way to Funky Friday. This sure is funky! Poofy Pants Department sound like a euphemism, such as "Nature's Bachelor" or "big girl's blouse."

  25. Cody B says Nah, I just meant the men in the pics had pants that reminded me of a less shiny MC Hammer style.

  29. jenny says Hey, cool...they just reissued this record, I think, so you can actually find it in stores, if you go to the right stores...before it was kind of a samizdat thing. Orchestra Baobob is playing a free show on the green up at Dartmouth in a week or so. I think we might go...vive l'afrique!

  30. Cody B says I'd go Jen..those cats are masters of the art...not as good as bbf and I are at photoshop, but pretty damn good.

  35. ivylander says Jenny, Baobob is amazing! Run, don't walk! Gotta say, Cody, you do not ever miss a single angle. Great cuts, great choices. I think this Tuesday thing might have legs....

  36. poebegone says Cody, i was so bummed yesterday that i could not join in but left a little tune in Bill/ivylander's post in the interim to rah-rah along with y'all, and as you know i tried forcibly :} to infuse it in my electro-Brazilian post. those aside, i am super digging the Group Doueh tune you posted and boy i don't think i've ever heard, or even heard of, Konono No. 1 before today. ps- i did not know Zarpex and Baudolino are mortal enemies, nor the story. i only remember that one of them caused a ruckus about hiphop (or was it someone else?). i should mog more often - too many things seem to pass me by. (:
