WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Peja 7

Posted about 1 year ago
I have been resigned to the fact that the mind control program I’m trying on my son isn't working. After a brief period on his charts, the compilation ► "Peja6":http://mog.com/Cody_B/blog_post/148198 ◄was rapidly being replaced by SpongeBob, Naked Brothers, and Crazy Frog. In an attempt to right the ship before his 7th birthday I put together this list (see comments), incorporating his kid hits with tunes I thought might grab him. It took a few weeks, but I think the Pixies are making some inroads. I was bursting with pride when I showed his somewhat horrified mom how he could sing the chorus of Monkey Gone To Heaven and scream along with these lines:if man is 5 [3x]then the devil is 6 [5x]then god is 7 [3x]I know drive by mogger ► "kristiana":http://mog.com/kristiana ◄ is happy too..she was my Pixies pusher, letting me know that no dad worth his salt could be without them. So thanks for that. With all the wonderful kid posts the last couple of days from the likes of► "Amber":http://mog.com/amber/blog_post/165919 ◄ and► "I Am":http://mog.com/I_am/blog_post/165915 ◄, I had to get my two Chucky Cheese tokens in.Check the Playlist in comments

  1. Cody B says 1. Popcorn – Crazy Frog 2. Magic Bus-The Who A childhood fave of mine, that isn’t crossing generations yet. Bus was the boys first word, so I thought this would be a shoo in…nope. Barnacles! (for those non-spongebob fans this is an expletive in their world) 3. Hey Harmonica Man- Stevie Wonder 4. I Don’t Wanna Go To School –The Naked Brothers Band 5. Back Of A Car – Big Star It was a good mix with the snappy guitar rock of the Naked Brothers and the boy sits in the back of the car and likes loud music..No immediate rejection, but no sing-a-longs yet. 6. Go All The Way- Raspberries 7. Monkey Gone To Heaven- Pixies The new kid classic! 8. Axel F- Crazy Frog 9. Twist and Crawl – English Beat 10. The Doolang – Andrea Carroll 11. The Best Day Ever- SpongeBob Squarepants 12. Oblivious- Aztec Camera 13. Senses Working Overtime- XTC The counting sections have elevated to sing-a-long status. 14. Bad Day- Alvin & The Chipmunks 15. Fat Man In The Bathtub- Little Feat A winner. Content issues abound but he doesn’t get them yet. 16. I’ve Been Everywhere- Johnny Cash 17. Ready,Willing, and Able- Clydie King (with Jimmie King) A cute little tune from NOLA. 18. Bananna Smoothie- The Naked Brothers Band 19. I’m Shakin’ – Little Willie John I think this one scares him a little bit…oops 20. Finger Poppin’ Time- Hank Ballard & The Midnighters 21. Tell Mama- Etta James 22. Under My Rock- SpongeBob Squarepants (Patrick) 23. Loves Me Like A Rock-Dixie Hummingbirds 24. Will The Circle Be Unbroken-The Pilgrim Travelers 25. We Are The Champions – Queen The only non-kid tune he’s requested lately. Yes, I realize I’m failing my boy.

  2. dachmo says He's seven, relax. He'll figure it out, just keep the music playing. I don't expect my 9 year old nephew to like the films of Krzysztof Kieslowski just yet.

  3. jenny says Um, what a cutie! Don't worry about his musical taste. As long as he's a good, smart, curious kid, he will find stuff to love at every stage of the game, and someday, a long time from now, he will have a bunch of songs that will remind him of his dad...and he'll like them for that reason alone. Though you might try a little Ramones.

  4. cpetersonart3 says Cody- you seem to be doing well, my 10 year old has been unable to to get past AC/DC, and now that a friend of his has guitar hero,he is nuts about Dragonforce and the closest I can get to Motown or Blues is Sly and the Family Stone-Thank you only because it was featured in the last Scooby Doo movie but by another artist. I am hoping to get him away from heavy metal but have been failing miserably---Good Luck you seem to be a little better at it than I have.

  5. Cody B says I know Dach, but I'm impatient. When's he gonna start asking why there isn't a George Clinton Box Set? Jen, ►"The Ramones are so '06":http://mog.com/Cody_B/blog_post/32539 ◄ :) Thanks cp, I think he might go for metal,too..but the seeds are planted. I've done all I can do.

  6. scotfree says I tried in vain to guide all three of my offspring down a more illuminated (to me) musical path. I gave up, but suddenly my son is steering in the right direction. I really don't think you can fight the peer pressure and culture they are most involved in, but if you keep playing what you like it will hopefully sink in. 'Course the girls are big on modern country, but I'll take one out of three.

  7. Bartleby says Apart from the Naked Brothers and Crazy Frog, I would love to have that mix tape for myself. (I'm a fan of SpongeBob too) I really think whether you want it or not as a person you're the sum of your own explorations and your parents' transmission... So, do not worry. Just play whatever you like as Scot said, all will permeate through osmosis even though you may never realise it.

  8. Rawkkiddoh says ahhh...nothing like experimenting on children. My son is two and I have refused to play regular kids music for him when we are driving. As a result he has to listen to mixes I have made in hopes to get his ear a listening. Every so often I will look back and see him dancing to the music that is playing, then when the song is done he simply says "Again!" This last week I hit a homer with the song Shining On by Big D & The Kids Table. I think its the horns that makes him like it.

  9. ivylander says What the others say is correct, Cody. Despite my solicitous attention, the 15-year-old is all about her peer group: From First To Last, Silverstein, Underoath, a bunch of bands whose names I'm blanking on at the moment. The 11-year-old, who has always followed his own star, is not as music-obsessed but has a rootsier turn of mind: he likes country and traditional Irish music, along with any song that has ever been heard on an animated Japanese cartoon. Still, I am not planning to judge my success until they are at least out of college.....

  10. amber says Cody! you are doing great and your man will work it out in his own time. At least you've included some of the classics in your list; I thought I was doing well until Bella came into the living room one night and asked if I'd ever heard of a band called The Beatles...I then realized I'd left some things out of her musical education. I hooked Bella with some of the Presidents of the United States of America (although we had to tell her they were saying "cute kitty" vs "F-you kitty" and was she ??mad?? when she figured it out) Their song "Poke and Destroy" is a great one for the boys

  11. I am says *I was bursting with pride when I showed his somewhat horrified mom how he could sing the chorus of Monkey Gone To Heaven * I can just see Susie's face now. Man, I think we are doing something right. My kids are into ska and old school hip hop right now. Mom is on the bandwagon so they are getting it from both sides. That boy of yours is just to handsome. I bet if Lindsay saw him now, she would be all over him like white on rice. She loves the older men.

  12. Cody B says My wife did smile eventually,Chris. But the secular antennae had definitely shown. Amber- Right now your are my template, he's really looking closely at that red mini-Strat at Guitar Center. Ivy-I'm trying not to obsess, but you know me, its difficult. Rawk- I have no doubt your boy will rawk. I've seen the way he throws food. Bartleby- I know you are right about Scot being right. It wasn't til I was past high school that I started appreciating the tunes my pops would play..The Dylans,Paxtons,Prines, and Waits of the world. But I came around..somehow I came around to liking just about everything.

  13. Marigold says Great post Cody. Pixies are some classic goods. That whole record is awesome. Keep us updated on his progress.

  14. Cody B says Thanks Amber, I'll check that for sure. He grandfather gave him a full size acoustic he likes to strap on..I'm just ruminating on whether we should get him an electric for his 7th bday coming in a few weeks.

  15. amber says You know, pawn shops and Craigs List are 2 great options for electric guitars and amps, especially for a first one. Bella's strat came from ebay and cost very little, even with shipping. She didn't care that it was second hand at all. Combining that plus lessons...should knock his socks off. Just think...in a few years, there will be a 2nd wave of MOGGERs...??Children of MOGGERS?? who will be so far ahead of the pack in terms of music knowledge and encouragement, partly due to the support we all get from each other. Are we ready for the Kids of MOG world tour?

  17. poebegone says ack! as a self-professed adorer of your Peja, how did i miss this post?!? that is one helluva mix there, Cody, i would probably have thanked my father for something like it when i was …30. yeah, the truth is you only start to become even interested in finding yourself at puberty. (and the self-search never really ends, does it?) my family turned me into an FM radio monster that i sang along to Survivor, Air Supply - heck, they were catchy, i make no apologies - until maybe fifth grade, when i found Duran Duran. on my own. nothing to do with parents. wait, i love those Pixies lines, too. my mental age is ...7?

  18. Cody B says I think the fact that "the devil is 6" really appealed to him..which means trouble for me I 'spose. Some say parents just pass on the genes..I'm looking to pass some genres to my boy. peace, poe.
