WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

SUTC: Sonny Spring Breakfast In Bed Version

Posted about 1 year ago
Three things woke me up this morning, a warm gentle breeze, sun streaming through the blinds, and the smell of brewing coffee.Things only got better when I heard the first notes of this Sonny Rollins tune, a take on the Johnny Mercer standard he cut in LA with Shelly Manne and Ray Brown in '57. It doesn't get much smoother. The next thing that hit my senses was the smell of bacon and within two sips of coffee, my platter arrived. The butter and maple syrup mixed together and dripped down the side of pancakes, kissing the strips of thick cut, not over- cooked bacon.Yard work notwithstanding, there was pretty much no doubt that this day would be a good one. Hope you enjoy yours.

  1. Bartleby says What a better to wake up to a Sunday morning than yours? Cody, I'm jealous. I got up at half past six this morning with a headache so bad it made me want to shoot myself but listening to Sonny Rollins just makes things smoother. (It's getting near the end of the afternoon here) That artwork is fecking brilliant too. I don't recall any other jazz cover with a black cowboy holding his sax anywhere else. Do you happen to know who shot this picture? Thank you very much, good sir.

  2. Baudolino says Google tells us that William Claxton was the man behind the camera. Mr Rollins and his tenor are always welcome

  6. Dzendvokh says Well Cody, I was going to try and stay away for the week, but dang it I just can't. A new laptop plus everyone here seems to have a wireless connection so it's too easy to slip online. Smooth tune man...... I have to say I am enjoying the midwest weather here in Cincy. Hot and humid and sticky but breezy and pleasant out in the yard under the trees. I woke up too late to catch my mom's breakfast (night out with old friends) but coffee and a blue sky were waiting for me. Thanks for adding a bit of soundtrack to my lazy, mid-afternoon reverie.

  7. ivylander says Nice, nice. Isn't Sonny supposed to be doing a benefit gig for Central Park Summerstage (where, by the way, Seun Kuti is playing over the July 4 weekend)?

  8. Cody B says Any chance you had some late night 5-Way Chili? mmmmmm What'd your wife say about the finger?

  9. Dzendvokh says Nope no chili....yet, don't worry I will get there. That's a given! She felt sorry for me... of course she has seen it before... I think she's just glad it wasn't any worse.

  12. Spike says The cover photo and album title were Rollins's idea. I saw him play live a year or two ago, and he blew fast and furiously for hours, with more energy than I could imagine ever mustering.

  15. Spike says I agree, Mike. I wish i could remember how to make triangles like Cody, and turn a word or phrase into a URL link. Something about a colon and quotation marks.

  16. HelenMarie says I kind of feel like you fill in some of the gaps I miss from Girlcrawl. I dig this while cooking and sippin' on wine. Spike, you've got everything you need! word or phrase in quotation marks, then colon, then URL. Don't know about those little arrows. Cody is Mr. fancy pants with that.

  17. Cody B says ALT+16 = ► ALT +17 = ◄ I can never see the links so I use the arrows.

  18. HelenMarie says Ah...Cool! We *always* see your links, it's most helpful. : )

  19. Cody B says Yeah, its a shame the girl crawl is not amongst us (and thanks for putting me in her league)..she was darn good mogger.

  20. Spike says ALT +16 on a Mac computer is probably different. Mac has an alt/option key. There's no 16 key, but there are of course 1 and 6 keys. Do I hold down the alt key while pushing the 1 and 6 keys, or while pushing the +, 1 and 6 keys? Neither option works. ¡§ ≠¡§

  21. Cody B says Oh sorry, don't know how to do mac..hold down alt hit 1 hit 6

  22. Spike says Cody, you've done your best. I'm used to suffering.
