Chillin' on Memorial Day

Posted about 4 years ago
Ok, so maybe you don't think of Memorial Day as a time for fairly smooth instrumental jazz tunes, but for me it is a time to think. Which for the most part comes down to why..Even though I have an idea about the answer, my hope is that our military will be serving in peacetime very, very soon.I have nothing but respect for the folks who serve and have served in the military. They are, unfortunately necessary. The elected leaders who choose to put these folks in harms way..yeah, I have a problem with them sometimes, but that's what the ballot is for.Check out Grant Green doing Neal Creque's Cease The Bombing here, and Pucho and His Latin Soul Brothers in comments. May cooler heads prevail.

  7. deadmandeadman says Cody, Cody, Cody. Where do I begin? Well, I luv the track(s). And I respect your sentiment. Sadly, war is necessary sometimes. I'm so proud of our men & women in uniform right now, reenlisting at rates unheard of ten years ago. No one who's been to war would ever wish it on even the most bilious of enemies. It's horrors & mind-numbing cruelty leave their mark, but sometimes it cannot (& ??should?? not) be avoided.

  9. Cody B says I got ya DMDM..just a lament for those gone and lost. No name calling for or against the leaders today..it ain't their day.

  10. scotfree says My daughter leaves for basic training (Navy) in a week. I could not be more proud of her for taking a very adult step to develop discipline in her life. At the same time, I pray that our leaders can show a higher level of respect for all these volunteers who allow themselves to be put in harms way for the cause. I don't disagree with DMDM that war can be necessary, but the idea that it should not be is a bit more subjective. (stop there scot) Was re-watching the film "Reds" over the last few days, and the scenes of war wounded at the Russian train station makes this day of respect most meaningful and scary. Sometimes I don't know whether to feel fortunate or ashamed that I've never known the faintest taste of war. Thanks for the most excellent and contemplative melodies, Cody!

  11. Bartleby says Gentle and wistful strumming from Grant Green -- any relation to Al? -- I think I must have some Pucho somewhere, I'll give it a spin when I find it. Thanks for the chill-out, Cody. Pity, there was no chilled cocktail served

  12. Cody B says Is that a sidecar,Mr.B? That'd solve just about any issue about now.. Wow, scot, much love and respect to you and your daughter. I can not begin to fathom the feelings you are having, with only a six year old in the house. Pixie, if you are looking back, Nick (Dzendvokh) lost a part of his finger in a machine incident last week. As you can see, his sense of humor is completely intact.

  13. jenny says Hi, Cody. We had a very nice Memorial Day parade and ceremony on the common today -- Sean played in the band -- and the speaker, for once, went easy on the empty slogans and talked about some of the men who had died in WWII, what kinds of kids they had been...hard to imagine these boys sledding down the hills and racing old cars one year, going off to die in North Africa the next. I've got a 13-year-old boy and I just have to say, it scares me. It really does.

  14. Cody B says I can see why Jenny...On the macro side it just seems like no matter how much "progress" is made we haven't come that far collectively in the valuing human life thing. Reading through World History it just stupifies me how poorly we treat each other. On the micro side, it looks like the first week in August when our fam is headed up to the Wildflower Inn (Lydonville,VT)..I don't suppose that's in your range is it?

  15. jenny says Yeah, you just can't believe people would do the things that they do to each other, regularly. Killing children and pregnant women, dismembering people, enslaving them, hoarding the food that they need to survive, building sub-code schools and pocketing the difference so that almost all the kids die when there's an earthquake ...And you're like, oh fine, but not here, but I think the veil is very thin, even in the most civilized places. but yeah, I'm not sure where lydonville is (I'm thinking way up north), but let's try to get together. I'm pretty sure we'll be around.

  17. ivylander says Have played both of these twice trying to decide which I am digging more. An honorable tie. Seems we can agree that no matter what each of thinks about the validity of a particular war, the people who are fighting it deserve all our respect.
