Parliament - Come In Out Of the Rain

Ruth Copeland co-wrote this tune w/Clyde Wilson as the Vietnam War heated up in 1969. It appeared as a 45 B-Side in 1970 for Parliament around the time of their Osmium album..It's currently available on a number of re-issues including Rhenium and First Thangs.

------

Happiness and peace is getting more and more out of my reach,

Violence and revolution seems to be all the people wanna preach.

You're gunnin' down your brothers ,molestin' your sisters and your mothers in the streets

------------

And the president's talkin' bout a change,

But nobodys got sense enough to come in out of the rain

---------

When will the people start gettin' together,

Learnin' to live and love one another?

When will the people start findin' each other,

Learnin' to give and help one another?

--------

Boys not old in age are being shipped from the cradle to the grave

Put a gun in their hands, sayin' it's your duty to kill another man

Guess somebody's been lyin' to the mothers

Makin' widows of sweethearts and lovers

And this is our land

---------

The president's talkin' bout a change,

But nobodys got sense enough to come in out of the rain

------

When will the people start getting' together,

Learnin' to live and love one another?

When will the people start findin' each other,

Learnin' to give and help one another?

A couple of weeks ago, as we waited for Barack's decision on Afghanistan, I watched Bill Moyers Journal and he devoted an entire episode to the escalation of war in Vietnam and it's paralells to Barack's Afghan question. Using recordings of Johnson's calls to advisors and friends he paints a picture of a man in a lose (war)/lose(politically) situation. Moyers should know..he was an advisor to LBJ.

When the program aired on November 20th, it was already pretty clear there was going to be an escalation in Afghanistan, just as it was pretty much a foregone conclusion what LBJ would do about Vietnam..the desicion clearly pained both men, but both chose escalation.

During Barack's campaign, which I supported and travelled to North Carolina for, I was often accused of being a kool aid drinker on this board, but I'm not. I believe in Barack and agree with him on many issues, but not this one.

How many times will history's lessons pour down, before we get the good sense to come out of the rain.

saw the Moyers show too. always enjoy listening to him. sometimes he is a little ahead of the pack. don't know of anyone i respect as much as him in reporting today. on NPR i heard a guy talk about how the time has come to attack ideas instead of countries as far as terrorism goes. love ruth copeland too. thanks

I'd never heard those LBJ tapes..pretty chilling stuff.

On the music side, do you know anything about Clyde Wilson? Looks he was a staff guy at Golden World records or associated in some way.

Aaah, that would make sense, I'm familiar with Mancha. I guess it was one of those deals where he had two names so he could claim writing credits on more stuff?

Stick to the topic and never get out of the boat..that's my mantra. Sorry to disappoint. Oh, who am I kidding, not really. I wouldn't expect any credit for going against my guy.

I will give you credit for going against O-bomb-a on this issue. But I can't decide which is worse: him breaking his campaign promise of getting us out asap (naive as I knew it to be at the time) by sending in 30,000 new US troops, or promising- now- to bring the troops back in 2011....before the 2012 election. Note, of course, that was where his generals politely disagreed with him.

Even CNN says his poll #'s are now below 50%- so can we say the honeymoon is over? I had mixed emotions when he won- while I didn't really want him to win I also didn't (and don't) want him to fail. But seeing all he has done so far I feel pretty lousy about him on many levels.

btw- his approval rating with our closest ally in the Mideast, Israel, is at a whopping 4%, according to the NY Times. There isn't a zero missing, either: it's 4%. So he is only looked on about 4% more favorably than Adolph Hitler there. Not good.

Okay, I'll jump off my soapbox now. Good song- always liked Parliament/Funkadelic. Maybe that is why Mancha/Wilson had to go with 2 names- stemming from the band's contract problems that led to them having 2 different names.....just wondering.

Honeymoon is over,yup..but if the economy rebounds, healthcare passes, etc,etc....if he gets stuff done then the numbers will go up.

If you scroll back in the day, I told all the euphoric Obama folks after the election, that the work was just beginning. I think a number of folks thought it was done after he won.

Its easy for pundits to say every local election or policy or poll is "the definitive moment" or a referendum on Obama when it's happening, it's what pundits do. But, we can only wait and see. Predictions at this point just don't seem viable.

    For now though, I'm disappointed..

I hear ya- and appreciate your candor. Perhaps you can take heart in what happened with Clinton. He tried all the really extreme stuff his first year. After all of that got shot down, he became more pragmatic, learned to work better with the other side and got more accomplished -and was able to do enough repair work in time to get himself re-elected (until he derailed himself with Monica, etc.).

Maybe Obama is following that playbook (except for the Monica, etc. part- hopefully). We'll see...and hope for the improvements sooner, rather than later.
