Under The Covers With 2 Lynns

Posted about 4 years ago
I've posted on Tami Lynn before. She cut one brilliant Southern Soul LP produced mainly by Wardell Quezergue (a NOLA soul master rivaling the great Allen Toussaint).â–º "Check that one here for more info on Tami":http://mog.com/music/Tami_Lynn â—„One of the great things about Tami's record is the song suite on side one, that ties diverse songs together with monologues that were style of the day.I didn't know the second track, Wings Upon Your Horn, was a Loretta Lynn tune, but now that I do know it makes a whole lot of sense. Southern Soul and Country music have a lot in common, even though this weeper gets 2 very different readings.Check out the cheatin' intrigue and heartache from Tami here and see Loretta's original in comments.

  3. Cody B says Thanks DM². I just noticed Baudolino representing another Wardell production as well. Makin' my day!

  4. zarpex says The Tami version is my pick, although something might be wrong with someone's computer somewhere - yours, mine, or MOG's - because it seems to end very abruptly. But it also keeps the country feel of the song tamped down to a degree that makes it easier for me to take - indeed, makes something more AOR out of it, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Oddly sparse arrangements, too; very striking. Hey, mon Capitaine; not to change the subject, but who did that funk song I liked so much again? I believe I said I was "floored" in my comments, if that rings a bell? I think it was Yvonne something, possibly...

  5. dermahrk says If forced to choose, I would go with Loretta. I hate that sterile background group adding "aahhhs" and such, but her version has a bit of punch.

  6. Cody B says Sorry about that Z, I believe it comes off that way because the side plays through in continous fashion segueing from track to track with no silence. I guess for CD that had to pick an arbitrary clip point. I think you are looking for â–º "Yvonne Fair":http://mog.com/Cody_B/blog_post/150365 â—„ I can't really decide on version d.mahrk..they both have their charms for me. The image wings upon your horns sticks with me though.

  7. ivylander says What a terrific song. It seems unfair to have to choose between the two - both women really sell the lyric with equal skill, but in very different ways. The slowed-down Tami Lynn version allows that line "You turned me into a woman....I can't stand" to really twist from something cliched (loss of virginity = beginning of womanhood) to a moment of real emotional truth,

  8. runobodyii says Around 4th grade my girlfriends and I were Loretta Lynn fanatics. I found myself impatient with Tami and didn't make it through. Thanks for this post. May have to go and find "Fist City."

  9. Cody B says @RUN-B.O.D.- I suppose if you were used to the Loretta version, the Tami would seem long and drawn out. For me, I heard the Tami first, so I had to adjust to the Loretta. @Ivy- Tami could sing and she does pull a lot out of the lyric. The way the first side of this album (re-issued by Water last year) unfolds is epic (in an Ike Hayes way). I think she did a ton of back up vocals including w/the Stones for Exile...

  11. Spike says They're both great. Loretta's photo and her singing here make me agree with Sturgell. Tami's beat was hard to detect at first, but it gave her delivery a more halting, pensive depth, whereas Loretta knew beforehand how she felt and fearlessly declaimed it.
