Sample Clearance:Sister Sanctified/My Philosophy

Posted over 2 years ago

Sometimes the tune and the sample both turn out to be excellent. Billy Cobham has a great break here at 4:23-ish and the intro of Stanley Turrentine's Sister Sanctified (written by an unsung hero of jazz-funk, Weldon Irvine)is a big part of BDP's My Philosophy..

Stanley Turrentine - Sister Sanctified

KRS-ONE (in 1988) says what a lot of folks say today about the popular rappers foisted on the listening public. Major label hip hop sounded pretty good 20+ years ago..

    WOW! Nice one, Cody!

I like how back in the day, rappers would take an obscure sample or break and turn it into a whole new song instead of just finding an already popular song and lifting the entire beat.  There's no art to that.

Thanks Mr.T. I like how they drop (as in remove) the beat for parts of the video..A less is more remix. good to see you 'round Troy.

    This is SO NICE!

And especially cleansing after being toxified by Toxic Tuesday earlier today.

Note how around the 3:25 mark the guitar almost does an Also Sprach Zarathustra-solo thing a la Deodato (1973)

    Thx...I needed this!

Love the Turrentine tune! A great find/active search. One thing I've often wondered: How do artists name their intrumentals? "Hmmm, this sounds like...Sister Sanctified."

Flux found the Funk. That is a good question. I dunno..A lot of times it seems like a stage direction in a play, but for the most part it's just jazz cats being cunning linguists. Closer examination of the album cover made me understand Sister Sanctified and Cherry, but that wasn't your question.

I have an MP3 on my comp credited to Bernard Purdie under the titleWay Back Home that sounds an awful lot like this Turrentine track. Is it mislabeled or a different recording with Weldon Irvine on keys and Purdie on drums?

Purdie had a tune called Way Back Home..from his 73 Shaft Lp..but as far as I know, no album of that title. Way Back Home is a different tune than S.Sanctified for sure. Way Back Home is a Wilton Felder (Crusaders) tune. I think Neal Creque played piano on the Purdie cut..hope that is helpful..there is a little similarity, but def diff.
