Ain't No Use (Live at The Bottom line '77)

First up the Meters touring behind their 76 release trick bag at the Bottom Line NYC doing Aint No Use. A 12 minute jam on the Rejuvenation LP which became kind of a standard at NYC loft parties, is stretched a little further here. Lots of Guitar from Leo Nocentelli.

The second cut is the JB's classic Pass The Peas. This was recorded live in '91 when The Meters (w/o Art and Zig) played in Switzerland with Maceo,Fred, and Pee Wee Ellis as their horn section. A funk summit if there ever was one.

Cool Fasted..If I am not mistaken..the blog, Home Of The Groove had some live stuff or a link to it. I can't seem to find it right now though. In any case that blog is genius when it comes to Nola music.

This is definitely new to me.

    Nice!

Keyboards on the first song sounds like Billy Preston.

In the second song, I thought I heard them introduce George Clinton, from P-Funk!

The first one is Art Neville at the organ..in the second w/Maceo Parker leading the chants, he calls for some p-funk and George's name comes up. So you have half of the Meters, playing with the Horns of James Brown's (and George Clinton's band) doing a James brown song and mixing it with some P-Funk..yeah, that doesn't happen everyday.

Mr. Clinton wasn't in the building though..as far as I know.

Good info- even if it isn't George, it still sounds great.

Don't you think the style of organ playing is reminiscent of Billy Preston's "Outta Space" (from 1972, I believe)?

Pass the peas is in my collection, but that first track is not... I am digging it, how does the studio track sound?

Cody, I need to dig out a band from the attic called "The Good Guys", they had an amazing live show back in the late 80's early 90's and where part of the whole "Black Rock Coalition".

Regardless, the second track reminded me of them since they used to do a song that sampled this song.. of course they had their own horn section, everything was live, no tape dubs or anything..

Here is a video of them 20 years after they broke up (Lead singer joined STOMP, brother the lead guitar player joined God, and the rest grew up)

The Good Guys are very Fishbone-Y which is always a good thing in my book...

The studio version of Ain't No Use is 11 + minutes long, a jam..Judging from their live shows of the era this was always the tune they went off on in concert.

Yes, they where very Fishbone. They did a couple of shows with Fishbone in NY in the late 80's which led to a proffessional recording effort, which led to ... nothing. Guess there was only room for 2 African American groups in the marketplace at the time. Fishbone and Living colour.

Regardless, they inspired another band of high school kids who went on to open up for The Good Guys for a year or so before starting to headline their own shows, and eventually leading to touring and a few album releases (Regional) but lost a court battle to keep their name "Boy o Boy" and became "Fighting Gravity".

Richmond's other claims to fame for musical acts are Patsy Cline, Gwar, Carbon Leaf, Lamb of God, Alabama Thunder Pussy, Seven Mary Three and Bruce Hornesby (Williamsburg 30 mins) and Dave Matthews Band (Charlottesville 1 hour)
