BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

Artist:
Album:
Track: Cosmic Slooop
(41)

I can't believe no one has posted this Westbound whipper snapper. Cosmic Slop from '73's Funkadelic opus, Cosmic Slop, is just ripe for the pickin' this Wednesday.

In the audio check out the original, on the video see a '79 version live from Chocolate City (a favorite venue for P-funkers).

Please also check the excellent backstory on the vid from a dilligent youtuber:

P-Funk opens the show with what at first appears to be a sloppy version of "Cosmic Slop." Garry Shider's mic is barely audible, the Capitol Centre was having electrical problems, and Michael Hampton's solo on the backside of the song was cut short because one of his tubes died. But when things are down is when P-Funk is seemingly at its best, with Garry coming through with a rare and impressive improvised solo (filling in for Michael) that turns what could have been a bad start into a great and unique version of "Cosmic Slop"

I'm sure I will not have to argue about the validity of this track for Metal Wednesday, like i did last week ◄ ,but if I do, I'm calling Uncle Jam's Army to help me settle the score. Enjoy!

timm, I think Cosmic Slop is the tightest set in the Funkadelic canon, the always present mega-length jam, March to the Witches Castle, while no Maggot Brian, is a nice anti-vietmammer, Nappy Dugout is mile wide and deep funk, No Compute is Zappa-esque in its humor, the rest is neo-doo-wop-motown-metal of the highest order, all wrapped up by the title cut which IMO is at or near the top of the Funkadelic list. Of course, I don't find too much fault with anything in the P-Funk oeuvre, so take my fawning with a grain of salt. If you're still looking check out Mogger fastnbulbous' review of the entire Funkadelic catalog.

mommie...what's a funkadelic? Someone just asked me, who the greatest funk band ever was?....that's a funny question obviously, but George clinton is pretty bad!...caught him a couple years ago at a college down the street...he chased all the college kids out with the super loud horns towards the end...all that were left in the crowd were us old purist/crossover/funkers/veggies.

He can be problematic these days and a few folks have mentioned that, but he usually brings a killer band to town..good to see you round these parts V1.

I'll take that as a validation of Cosmic Slop's metalness, Charley, 'cause I'd rather switch than fight. Santana was pretty metal, before he was Smooth, huh?

The smoking ban was most definitely not in effect at this time.

quick story- My first unchaperoned concert was Aerosmith, around 77/78, with a bunch of my middle school friends. During the 30 minute Train kept a-rollin' version, the joint reached my seat. I declined, laughed, and said," no way, my Mom smokes pot, how cool can it be?"

Your posting this track by Funkadelic as a metal track is a perfect illustration of what my mate and I were discussing a month ago. We were sitting in a café and caught "Comin' Round the Mountain" and got onto how their concerts were incredible shows and specifically Eddie Hazel's live performance. At one point, my friend exclaimed: "People were coming to see some raw funk and they got hard metal instead. It must have blown the audience mind. I know I'd have been blown to dust."
