    Nat Adderley Sextet
  • Album:
    Cannonball Adderley Presents:Soul Zodiac
  • Track:
    Introduction Narrated By Rick Holmes
I know you haven’t said anything, but I know what you are thinking: Gosh Dang it, there just aren’t enough posts on MOG about, Sax driven, Salacious Soul Jazz with Zodiac themed spoken word interludes. I’m here to change all that with the help of two recent blog-finds, both from the venerable Adderley clan. Now Nat and Cannonball started out as straight jazz guys, poll -winner types in the 50’s, in the 60’s they gravitated toward populist jazz funk (check Cannonball’s excellent Mercy,Mercy,Mercy w/ an intro from Jesse Jackson), but by the 70’s, as jazz started to fade from the popular psyche, the Adderley’s, desperate I suppose, jumped the shark, and went full force into the zodiac scene..not just once either.Cannonball Adderley Presents The Nat Adderley Sextet (heh):Soul Zodiac from 1972 gives us the funky intro from the voice of both records Rick Holmes..Rick Holmes also gives us his classic Roy Ayers production that is more on the Black History tip, Remember To Remember in comments.Cannonball Adderley Presents Love,Sex, and The Zodiac (1974) is represented here by Aries:Damn RightIf you want me to post a song for your sign, just let me know..

  12. Mike the Knife says Uh-huh. Spacey. Reminds me of one of the first "progressive" albums I ever heard as a callow lad: "The Zodiac Cosmic Sounds" - a wacky Moog-synthesizer-loaded flight of fancy with earnest hippy-dippy narration that was released on Elektra in those psycho-delic '60s. Such early exposure to the "bleeps" and "blorps" probably made me far more tolerent of Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Yes than I might have been - and downright enamoured of synth-poppers such as Depeche Mode/

  13. Cody B says I'll tell ya Mr.Knife, it's a long way from this in '58: I still like my new zodiac records though, but on a more comedic tip.

  14. Mike the Knife says Man, that sure was Somethin' Else! But it's not too hard to reconcile the two when you consider what incense, sitars and a tab of acid can to do the most urbane, sophisticated mind...
