WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Under The Covers With 70's Cheeze

Posted about 1 year ago
If you grew up listening to Am radio in the 70's like I did, you are intimately familiar with Summer Breeze by Seals & Crofts..I mean stations played that record once an hour for almost all of 1972. The pleasant enough tune has been permanently lodged in my brain since.Clearly I'm not the only one..3 covers here from Reggae Organ king Jackie Mittoo, the family funk of the Isley Bros., and the smoove electric piano version from Ramsey Lewis.Float on..

  2. ivylander says Always loved that Isleys track as much as I detested the original. (Their songs weren't bad, but good God, those whingey voices....) The Ramsey Lewis is new, though, and he really does something different and cool with it. The Jackie Mittoo I've not feeling just yet, but give me time....

  3. Pop Savant says I totally grew up on this song (and have the CD to prove it) It's use in Dazed and Confused totally sums up the era it portrays.

  4. Cody B says I agree Pop S., songs like Summer Breeze perfectly capture where pop music/culture were at in the 70's. The singles got played so incessantly though. I've spent a lifetime trying to balance my charts..

  7. Cody B says Heh Jenny..I am the seventies..I had platform shoes with alternating black and white layers on the heel. I got tired of the platforms so I broke off my marshmallows and had some nice balck and white saddle shoes. Oy Vey.. Brendan, I love when the jasmine gets in my mind, but when it gets on my clothes, I can't get it out, even if I pretreat with Shout.

  9. Cody B says I'd say about 70% of the 68000 or so tracks i have are from the 70's. The AM radio of the 70's though (I was 6 to 15 years old) was becoming increasingly formulaic and my cheese reaction was to those many overplayed chart toppers (some of which were still quite good). Outside of the top 40 though the 70's ruled..

  10. Bartleby says I can't get enough of that Ramsey Lewis's Hammond -- it's a magisterial lesson on what it can do. Just brilliant. I really enjoy your way presenting different interpretations of a classic. I must say I'm with Ivy. The Isley Brothers can redeem anything with their vocal arrangements. As for the reggae, it is a bit unexpected and takes time to get to. Altogether very nice. As usual, a juicy post for which I'm most appreciative. Thanks Cody.

  16. Cody B says Thanks Dz,Knife. Judging from Jackie's vocal, breezes aren't the only thing floating in the air..not that i have a problem with that.

  17. Cody B says Agreed T..I'm a 70's lover. Yeah..wishful thinking on the summer breezes.

  18. TBoom says Summer breeze at the end of February. Are these songs of longing for you? Really like the versions here. This song is totally 70's cheese but I always liked it. The 70's were such a great time for music: I think that while corporations focused on the AM air play, the FM counterparts had so much freedom (relatively) to play a wider range of great music.
