When Al Green turned away from secular music toward the end of the 70's, a lot of folks turned away from Al Green. On a purely musical level those folks missed out.If you caught the direction the Rev. was going in his last few secular records,self-produced with some of his own acoustic guitar playing and hints of Funk (The Belle Album and Have a Good time), his first gospel records weren't a whole lot different.Fact is, he was singing better than ever. Check these tunes from 1980 and feel just how soulful church can be.

  4. Cody B says Good to hear from ya kb..I definitely found myself in the skeptic group concerning his church material, but over time, I have come around. Here's recent Al on acoustic Hints of the Gospel from secular days

  5. ivylander says The big change in the gospel stuff - at least what you've given us here - is the backing. Especially in the "None But The Righteous," which sounds like a whole different cast of characters from Al's hits - I'd bet there isn't a single person named Hodges playing on it. "In The Holy Name of Jesus" is right up there with his bestm I would venture to say.....

  7. Cody B says Agreed,Ivy. He recorded this one at his studio(not Hi) like the last couple secular records..by no stretch does it sound like the earlier material, but compared to his late secular records, it is very similar. Almost like he would switch baby out for Jesus, pushing the religious half of the Al dichotomy into the spotlight without squashing the naughty bits that were kept simmering beneath the surface.

  10. Bartleby says God has mysterious ways -- I would have to agree with you Cody, even when the Rev Green sings her fervour for the One you can hear the secular soul man whose sensuousness appealed to so many. If I had my reserve about his religious recording, this post of yours have cast it away... Time for revision.

  15. extraordinarypoems says I've been to Al Green's church in Memphis -- amazing experience. Small church, very homey experience. He was so natural in that realm, as much as he seemed to be on stage. I like his music.

  17. extraordinarypoems says I am trying hard to remember one of his newer songs; I saw him perform it live on television (the Today show or something, in the morning) a few years back --- he was wearing a white suit, as I recall. It was so beautiful! Damn, I've googled around and can't find it. It is a love song --- anybody see that show, maybe?

  20. Cody B says In 2005 promoting Everything's Ok he appeared on Tavis Smiley's show, but it looks like he was in black.. Any songs ring a bell? 1.Everything's OK 2 You Are So Beautiful 3 Build Me Up 4 Perfect to Me 5 Nobody But You 6 Real Love 7 I Can Make Music 8 Be My Baby 9 Magic Road 10 I Wanna Hold You 11 Another Day 12 All the Time He was in black on a Daily Show episode talking about the song Everything's OK On April 19,2005 he sang Perfect to Me on Letterman, this is not that version, but here's A version It seems like it's hard to get the video from the talk shows,so i dont know if I'll be able to track down the white suit performance and he was on a lot of talk shows promoting that record. To find the different talk show episodes he was on I looked at imbd http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0337585/ Hope this helps..
