WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Neo-Blaxploitation Film To Be Screened at Sundance (In A Perfect World)

Posted 4 months ago

My pops in an actor and a writer, so every now and again he sends me scripts or plays he thinks I might be interested in. This past week he sent me a neo-blaxploitation story treatment that made my day. It's half tongue-in-cheek and half tribute, including a love story angle that, I think, is a genre first. You see in this flick, both the private dick and his woman are working the case. Superpeople rolls hard with both female and male lead badasses.

Also included with the story treatment was a list of music cues for the soundtrack, which I've cobbled together for you here. The story is set in 80's crack era Brooklyn and the 70's tunes the producers already have rights for is top notch.

1. Superpeople - The Notations: A Curtis Mayfield sound alike, probably because he produced it. Opening credits music cue.

2. Mr. Cool - Rasputin's Stash: The music cue to introduce the heavy as he steps out of his ride.

3. Coffy Is The Color- Roy Ayers: The music cue for the heroine..a tribute to Pam Grier

4. Slick City - James Mason: The music cue for a daytime Manhattan scene

5. Easin' In - Edwin Starr: The hero's theme music..Originally from Hell Up In Harlem

6. Inside You - Eddie Henderson: Night shoot skyline drive music cue.

7. Party Down - Little Beaver: Small Club in Brooklyn music cue

8. Slick - Willie Hutch: The snitches music cue..originally from The Mack

9. Give Me Your Love - Young Holt Unlimited..seduction sequence in the car..cover of Mayfield tune from Superfly

10. Superman Lover - Johnny "Guitar" Watson- Music cue for the players ball sequence

11. Finger In It-Harlem Underground Band-Music cue for the VIP Lounge scene

12. Mr. Magic - Kellee Patterson-Kellee actually signed to perform the tune.."live" performance at the Players Ball, serenading the Pimp Of The Year.

13. Come On Down - Greg Perry: Soft lit post-love scene music cue

14. It's Only Love Doing It's Thing - Barry White: Music cue during a slo mo gun battle sequence

15. Give Me The Sunshine- Leo's Sunshipp: Out credit music cue as the sun rises after a night of love and war on the streets.

This thing looks and sounds like a stone gas..I can't wait. I'm thinking Halle and Denzel. Keep scrolling down if you wanna hear any of the tunes..it's about an hours worth.

All I need to do now is write the script, win the lottery, and make the movie. Any Rich and talented people, feel free to use my idea.

I guess blaxploitation is back with Black Dynamite doing well at last year's (I think it was last year) Sundance.

Conceptual..wow,thanks scot, no rush..I figure if I miss a friday or two I have some funk credit in these longer items..I figger this way I don't clog things up with numerous barely read posts. Why do that when I can have just one barely read post.

Slammin' addition..now there's an hour and 4 minutes of music within these html walls at Funk Club USA.
