Track:The Lope Song -74
Eddie Russ ('lectric piano) made this funky flute jam back in about '74, when jazz folk were having a hard time getting arrested. He continued to try to cross over in '78 with I Heard That, featuring, heaven forbid..a vocal (Renee Coles). This is Eddie's first time on MOG,so go easy on him and he might just put a little funk in your Friday. A trifle, really, but slyly funky nonetheless. Miss you MOG.

Yep, Eddie's been slept on for too long...I still return to his 1978 album "Take A Look at Yourself" (including "I Heard That") quite often. Sweet and mellow fusion at it's best.

nice seeing you cody, thought I heard Larry Norero flute and sax before,... another motown musician.Nice early 70's vibe Thanks
I did forget to mention that Eddie was a Detroiter..I figgered you would be on that cp. Good call.
Hey Mr.Laf..been ultrabusy lately..missed the last couple 4BB posts. I gotta rectify that. Cheers. Nice cover on that Take a Look at Yourself LP,too...
C!! fine flute flaunting...good thing he did not bend it up busting outta that eggshell.
Fresh Out is the album Title, ha..funny + funky flute = a friday form of fun.
fortunately for friday's fonics. :)

The Funks on Me
Not bad, not bad....
I would like to echo Baudolino's sentiments
Cody has made a funky post
Friday feels so much better now
Sweet of you to say rummy..it's good to be partially back in the presence of the enlightened music folk.
Cody B, you've turned me onto so many great jazzy R&B acts, and this is another one!
Mr. Spike, king of the interesting avatars and eclectic, infallible taste. Good to see ya.

One is happy to see flatterer you return, bearing interesting links galore.
I've been on a little bit of a Jazz bender recently but mostly 50's and 60's stuff. Thanks for sharing the Eddie Russ. It brings me at least one decade closer to the present.
Do you know any recent Jazz (in the 2000's) that you'd recommend.
Love it.
Reminds me of recurring problem I have. I heard this Rahsaan Roland Kirk sample in a song and have been dying to know about some albums where his flute playing shone bright just as Russ'.
Suggestions anyone?
The track I heard it in is called Hi-Top Fade Parade, by the Los Angeles duo Adventure Time! Jut in case some was familiar.
TBoom, do you mean "real" jazz or the funky kind? I mean I like Bad Plus, MMW, and Brad Mehldau, but I'd be the first to admit I'm not too hip to the happenings of what's now in jazz either..perhaps one of the enlightened can jump in..
Hey Oat
This album is one of the funkiest I've heard from RRK
There is some flute on the track I posted..
But I bet it might be Portrait of Those Beautiful Ladies from Three Sided Dream..I know I've heard that sampled.
Whew, I think the funk flu is incubating in me now....
I am digging through these as I type Cody.
It is not "Those Beautiful Ladies", the particular track I am looking for he really overblows some notes and it is not in such a smooth progression, but with his trademark voicing as I hear in this one. Perhaps it was a more free jazz flute record?
I will keep you posted on my quest.
K, Oat..sleuth on.
Long time no see, Mr.Ivy..I wish it was Funk-Fu Flute, but those days are sadly gone. Just saw this film called Moolade by Ousmane Sembene..cool stuff. Lots of kora on the soundtrack.
Roland Kirk's 1964 album I Talk to the Spirits is all flute.
That sounds like the era I am looking for - pre soul jazz
I have the Complete Mercury of RRK and it has that record..lemme know if you want something OAT.
God damn, that's a brilliant track. I nearly forgot what a wizard you are. But only nearly ... ;). O.k. it's Monday now, but that funks still the shit out of me. A thousand thanks for this one.
Hey Hermes..you know Friday, Monday, it doesn't really matter. Funk this old just gets better with age. Good to see ya.
Cody educate me!
