MOG Stats 7:Page Views

Posted 5 months ago

My Top Ten Posts by page view

  1. Changes Motown 1968;The B-Sides (number 65 on the all time MOG hit parade)
  2. Smiles In An Instant,Happiness In a Minit
  3. What The Kid Is Listening to
  4. Defending The Honor Of Hip Hop
  5. Funky Friday:Pleasure and Pain
  6. Highlights From The Hip Hop Genome
  7. Mardi Gras Funk
  8. Funky Friday:The Motor Booty Affair
  9. Under The Covers With Ruth Copeland
  10. Chicago Gangsters Lay Funk Foundation For Hip Hop Gold

Why did these posts receieve almost 2000 percent more page views than my average post does?

Only one of them (number 4) is in my Top 10 most discussed, so there must be another reason. My first impression is that it's tags and pictures that pushed these guys to the top of the charts.

Analysis

10. The post is very old, but when it was new it had a picture of Al Capone and Al Capone's Car in it, that came up pretty high in google searches for Chicago Gangsters, Al Capone's Ride, or Al Capone. The Post was about the band Chicago Gangsters.

9.If you do a regular google search for Ruth Copeland, this post from over a year ago, is still in the top 5. Mogger Spike 1 joined the site when he found this post from google. Plus anything from the P-Funk ouevre gets a lot of web action.

8.Still showing on the 2nd page of searches for Motor Booty Affair images and on the second page of Google web searches.

7.Google search Mardi Gras Funk in images or a web search and you find this post first. Search Mardi Gras Indians images and one of the pictures from the post is on the first page.

6.Search Lenny Roberts (the creator of the Hip Hop genome, ultimate breaks and beats) images and you'll find my post on the first page.

5.Search images for Ohio Players Pain, Ohio Players, Ohio Players Pleasure,or Pain and Pleasure (i'm sure this was most helpful) and this post is on the first page.

4.Google Defending Hip Hop and this post is on the first page..Image search Defending Hip hop and this post is the second entry. Image search basehead hip hop and this post is on the front page. The post also had a lot of discussion and embedded videos which may have added to the hits. I don't post a lot of video but I'm guessing video searches draw a lot of action as well.

3.My top 3 read posts went to a whole nuther level. With number 3 receiving 5000 more hits than number 4. I'm guessing (cause the posts aren't anywhere in google rankings) that posting about a kids band called the Naked Brothers and about Spongebob doesn't hurt in getting page views.

2. If you google smile in an instant this post is at the top, but the real reason this got viewed so much is that after a MOG remodel it was the default first post when any user hit the Mogosphere..

1.If you google Motown 1968 in a web search, or an image search this is on the first page. Image search Marvelettes its on the first page. Image search Bobby Taylor and The Vancouvers-first page,Tommy Chong Motown, first entry. I guess I caught search engine lightning in a bottle with this one. (11,510 views and counting)

Thanks MOGfather and MOG tech for adding the pageview feature. For obsessives like myself it is a treat.

If anyone would like to share their stats, I'd love to hear some numbers and thoughts.

Wow, that got me going to my own stats. To find out that over 5500 people have read a post makes me start wondering whether one shouldn't be - um - "professional". My biggest post is a Rock Shrine for The Scotch of St. James. The new Mog has fucked up the formatting and my tags have gone, so lord knows why that's so popular. The 3rd most popular post is the Shrine for The Hammersmith Palais, which shows that The Clash and Joe Strummer remain gods of rock. (An impetus for me to post my next Shrine, which is Rehearsals Rehearsals.) Must remember to put the word "naked" into a headline...

    Jonh,

When you google image Rock Shrine you have more than a few up there. A regular google search of Rock Shrine has you on the first google page as well. Google any band name + shrine, and you are right there.

Every now and again I go back and edit some of my old posts to fix 'em up. After the last upgrade, I asked MOG tech to fix some and they did..thanks again MOG support.

Since you asked here's my top posts with brief explanations.

    1. Fake Blood  - these guys were really popular all at once last October when I posted this.

    2. Flight Of The Conchords - again really popular.

    3. It's Only a Paper Moon - one of my favorite songs and posts. I guess a lot of Paper Moon enthusiasts out there.

    4. Cartoom!  - only one of the coolest albums ever by a couple of Japanese guys.

    5. Soko  - I still never got an album by this French girl but I guess people really like her.

    6. Cornelius - Omstart  - he's a Japanese rock god and poeple like em.

    7.  Dying naked isn't as embarr...  - my Mog wars post.  What Jonh said is the reason why it's popular.

    8.  Hercules and Love Affair  - new hip and popular album.

    9. Get The Fuck Up - it's got a cussword in the title.

    10. Bikes Blues and BBQ - this is a local Fayetteville biker convention.  Lot of locals and bikers google it.

There you go.  My top ones in a nutshell.

Oh yeah Sam..All the complaining we have done at various times regarding MOG upgrades is true. Not about the glitches, but about the ghettoization of the community. I mean, this post, with its 150 page views is at the top of the most read pile for the 24.

It is just so difficult to reach a wider audience with so many posts on the site. We have our small group of active (shrinking daily it seems) Moggers that used to be the whole site.We now are just a sliver.

Even the MOGnews folks, who were gradually becoming part of the fold and commenting on posts are relatively silent now.

New folks who look at the home page will see pretty much nothing but blog news.

Other than MMN posts, the most read of all time posts are all over 6 months old..most over a year old.

Thanks SL. Mostly I don't care too much for stats. I know it doesn't seem like it, but I'm really concerned about the community and trying to explain it and the vibe I get with something concrete. Of course, in the class I learned that numbers and stats can mean a lot of things and should be taken with a huge grain of salt.

I feel the same about the posts we make as I do about the bands we love..I just want more people to read and listen to them.

    Hey Mark. You cranky? Nooo

Yeah the graph really depressed me. I guess one factor I didn't take into consideration was the increase in page views over time, ie people looking at old posts well after they were written, which brings you back to the search engine issue and why tags are important.

Some posts get a lot of views immediately because of their current content, the posts of the old school variety have a long shelf life, 'cause they are already stale:)

So trying to tweak the search engine gods does have some motive other than purience or look at me..henceforth I shall tag with only relevant music facts.

Another thing I get from this, is that the MOGfather was absolutely right when he talked about the cliques developing.  Our small group is the Mogger clique using all the features of MOG, while other folks use just the news.

I did this and was surprised to see one of my posts had over 1900 views  "The Pogues, The Wire, what song is that?"  So I did a google search using the Pogues and The wire and my post was the first item showing.  Kinda interesting, but nowhere near as fun as reading this thread!

    Thanks dc,

It's my impression that real stats folks, though loving raw data, attempt to get beyond the numbers for other stuff..the data is the start of the conversation, not the definitive end.

data data data, I agree, the data is the start of the conversation.  Its all about figuring out the right  bits to pull.

    thanks for (another) excellent post!

I just thought that some folks might think I knew what I was doing and trying to get page views for my posts..no way. Don't get me wrong, I want folks to read my shite, but no internet steroids were used for my top 10, just luck. I have no idea what I'm doing.

Only recently, after looking at the top posts of all time did I start to find out about SEO's. I didn't even know what an SEO was until Lady Miss mentioned it here.

I mean I love the internets, but the whole secrets of the search engine thing is kinda off putting.

this really is the wrong time (= no time) for me to get into stats but ... can't ... resist.

#1 is Martina Topley-Bird. this post sez nothing, nothing at all, other than that her album #2's coming out. i never even had a chance to get my inner drama queen out in this post. wait, that must be why.

#2, 3, 5 are related -- manele music, Rachid Taha, and other songs from a werewolf movie called Blood and Chocolate. i swear, there has to be a cult out there tracking these down. what's also embarrassing is that it's not a good movie (dachmo will corroborate this, bet he still hates me for it) but i thought had a good soundtrack.

#4 is a little piece of fiction i wrote, which brings me to what Jonh said - makes me start wondering whether one shouldn't be - um - "professional".  - um, sheesh, yeah.
