MELT-PROOF AND SCRATCH-RESISTANT

FF:Beats and Beats Bitten For Beats (by Dr. Dre)

Ok, so mullytron already patted his own back about these headphones that he helped create, but after I got a chance to hear them..from mully himself, I'd have to say he deserves welts on his back from multiple pats. These are some most excellent headphones. I'm no audiophile so I can't get into the guts of these things or the Khz's or anything like that...but if you like entering a private sound world where instruments are where they are supposed to be, snares crack and bass rumbles and booms, you'll want to try these. Thanks mully..you done good.

My big problem when I got these home, was what to listen to first. I chose to go for what I know and what's been ringing my bell on just regular speakers lately. I have been working on a post about a couple of samples I rececently discovered so I started there. The 5 Stairsteps came into my head because, as you might have heard, I just dumped my whole CD collection. I was on the phone with my buddy prior to THE CD DUMP and he was quizzing me on what records he should get from me. I had already packed my 9 boxes, so I wanted him to be specific about what he wanted before I started digging in my neatly stacked piles.

He would ask me for a record he wanted and I would look in itunes and help him decide if he wanted it. He said,"What do you have on the 5 Stairsteps ?"

(The Chicago singing group that started in the biz as a Jackson 5-style outfit under the tuteledge of Curtis Mayfield, but didn't score big -Oooh Child- 'til they left him. Lead singer Kenny Burke then went on to cut the massive stepper-Keep Risin' To the Top)

Ok, where was I, oh yeah, The Stairsteps..I mentioned Ooh child and started flipping through the rest of their tunes (comme ci-comme ca soul) until I hit on Danger! She's a Stranger..I said, "whoa..you need this tune kid, it sounds like something RZA would sample." Turns out the tune was sampled by Organized Noise (a fave production team of mine) for Outkast (see dot above). Danger is a cool little slice of Chicago cinematic soul..and my friend bought it off me.

Another friend (from another site which will remain nameless) is a beat collector over in Hungary. He just scored a series of vinyl bootlegs that reissued a bunch of funky 45's. One of those records was Deep Gully by the Outlaw Blues Band. I had never heard of these cats, but I dug their funky blues tune (which I recognized as sample fodder right away) for the not often heard, studio chatter break ,about 3/4 of the way through. The boys in the band left the chatter in to be quirky and to set themselves apart from the already crowded blues rock scene of 1970. They still have a website up, talking about their "new blues style"..their bio is a hoot, but I will never deny, that Deep Gully belongs in the pantheon of rock break beat tunes (perhaps because it's so easy to sample)....just one long groove.

DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill took advantage of Deep Gully for When The Shit Goes Down, perhaps finally making the Outlaw Blues Band, outlaws for real..

So that's whats been going on in my optimum sonic world this week, beats, beats, and more beats coming through some incredible sounding Beats. Thanks mully. Have a fun(k) filled weekend everybody..I still have a couple more days with these monsters.

Love the congas in that vid..Kenny (Keni) looks a little shy. Ooh Child grabs me every time, cool version..

BTW-If you stopped by earlier and my players weren't working..everything should be in order now.

I didn't know you were into break-beats and samples like that.  We should get another round of sample clearance going.

I've got a couple gigs of famously sampled songs and breaks that I should get to you somehow.

BTW, Organized Noize is the shit!!!

I mean, I knew you were into the oldies, but not specifically samples and breaks.  Though, I guess if I had given it any thought it wouldn't have been extremely tough to deduce.  I just haven't been on top of my deducing these days.

Do a smell a sample smack down brewing? ;-)

Geez, Cody - I'm going to have to dedicate a good chunk of my Saturday morning just to listen through all your stuff. It's too late and I'm too sleepy to do them justice right now. I guess I missed the story on Mully's headphones, but if they bear the "Endorsed by Cody B" stamp, they must be good.

    Hi LMI.

There could very well be a smackdown.

If only the MOGdots had a volume control..it's too loud in the headphones without it.

I picked up the ear bud version when turntablelab had a 20% off sale of all headphones - the major drawback is the fact that none of the rubber ear pieces fit really well for me - they either fall out of my ears or they hurt like hell - but otherwise - the sound quality is astounding.  And not just for hip-hop... I listened to an album by Electric President (soothing alternative type stuff) and heard some stuff that I never did before.  Really, really cool - and though the uncomfortable part is a pain in the ass (ears?), they're worth it overall if just for the rubber-band type cord that really doesn't get tangled and looks good in the process.
