Nude, All-Female Feminist Bands With Silver Body Paint Singing About Football

Artist:

Album:Isis

Track:Do The Football
Only scotfree could've come up with this one. All praise to him.
Formed From the ashes of pioneer '60's girl group, Goldie and The Gingerbreads, Isis wanted to shed the cutesy girl group image and form a band of women.
They did not play around; funk, soul, and jazzin' it like Blood,Sweat, and Tears, but with a new perspective:Straight outta NYC,with openly gay women in the band. Just a wee bit ahead of their time for the early 70's.
Carol MacDonald lead vocals, rhythm guitar, writer, arranger
Ginger Bianco drums, co-leader, co-founder, co-writer
Suzi Ghezzi lead guitar
Stella Bass bass, vocals, writer
Nydia "Liberty" Mata percussion, congas, bongos
Lauren Draper trumpet, French horn, vocals
Lolly Bienenfield trombone, vocals
Jeanie Fineberg tenor saxophone

Check Out Do The Football in the dot (the football was a dance going around at the time) and the sample worthy flute-fueled April Fool in the vid (most excellent drum break).
The original Isis..bow down.

Dude, You had me at 'Nude'.
I'm digging the comic/strong girl montage. Anything with Vampirella has my attention.
Mr. Free kinda put it out on a lark and it made my day..there was a lot happenin' downtown is '72. Now it's condos and high end shopping.
Well, I was going to say you had me at nude, but some other perv beat me to it, it seems.
That's awesome. Listen to April Fool really close on headphones, and you can hear one of the band complaining about blowing the last note just as it fades out. I love the 70s.
Groonie, I wouldn't say they are prog, but they do stretch it out a bit, and they are certainly viking -worthy and progressive in other areas.
Yup mully, there was definitely some 'spearamintin' goin on then. Gotta go get my headphones..
There ya go C, let's fill all them holes. And, you can thank me, but I gotta give a shout to the rock'n'roll pimp himself, whose modern day Isis comments reminded me of this unresolved gemstone. Glad ya dug it...
Will do...RAWK,Pimp. Much praise to you and mr.free, thank you both. This Isis might be the favorite thing the other Isis ever did for me.
They can wear whatever they want to and play THIS music anytime.
I haven't had a chance to hear it but their second album was produced by Allen Toussaint..this first effort was a "Shadow" Morton (Janis Ian,Iron Butterfly,Shangri-Las,Vanilla Fudge) production.
Interesting production credits, indeed.
Well, I held out until "silver body paint"....
Actually, though I'd never heard any of their music until this moment. for some reason I do recall this album cover making a significant impression on my reluctantly virginal teenaged self.....
I bet they stood out in the "I" section.
They weren't the only thing that stood out....
I enjoy being your Ed McMahon,Ivy..I tee it up and you deliver. Like Karnac on acid.
However, I am in possession of the McMahon physique....
when I read the byline for your post, all I could think of were hot, hot, hot Bond ladies with voices more appropriate to a larger woman, like say Shirley Bassey. But I'm not disappointed. Thanks for the turn on.
Hey X..
Yeah, I went salacious. I didn't want these ladies to slip into the MOG-ether too fast. scot really blew me away here, 'cause I had never heard of them before. Usually,I've at least "heard of" a band like this, but it was totally new to me.
I mean I had of heard of 70's bands with a "gimmick" like The Flock, Ultimate Spinach, etc. who were on big labels. It twas the man keeping these ladies down.
love the post and the thread is killing me. great catch mully on the band catching a clam (thats what horn okayes called mistakes in the early 80s at least). . . . naked lady trombonist i worship thee
Get a room you 2.
Which 2? You and Groon?
