Under the Covers with The Godfather

Posted over 4 years ago
Good God! Heavy Funk Covers From Around The World 1968-1974, is the kind of record I am hopelessly pre disposed to buy. I can't resist the charms of a record entirely composed of James Brown covers, but I should have. There's some Brazilian stuff, some German, some African, but for the most part the covers are by the numbers, sounding similar to the originals, but with singers that just can't duplicate the Godfather. The Dave Pike Set record though makes the set worth it for me, because it is a vibes- led jazzfunkifacation of I Got That Feelin' that I can groove to. Besides, it is gloriously and smartly instrumental. The other stuff may grow on me, but for now, this is about all I'd profer for a mix tape (well the High School Band version of It's My Thing might squeak in.)...

  4. mickimicki says That sucked! It was snowing outside (!!!), I had a nice cup of tea and nothing to do but be of occasional help in my son's "engineering" projects.... and that THING kept appearing on my screen. Good thing Anna's radio show was on... still I had to go and do some housework to keep myself busy, instead of lurking around on mog... screw that...

  10. brendanhalpin says Almost any tribute album just makes me want to listen to the originals. Except maybe for that Woody Guthrie/Leadbelly tribute from the 80's, which knocked me out. I like this tune, anyway. Is The High School Band really a high school band, or is that just the name of the band?

  12. Cody B says Thanks Miss J, I was going for humor. No B, the High school band is for real, the 1970 version of the Douglass High School Show band..A couple of years ago the crate diggers starting finding these high school band funk records and reissuing them. The Kashmere Stage band from Dallas has a whole album a very tight funk. High School gym Funk from Douglass High ~XCanjDn2eao.mp3~ Brazilian Funk ~BKlP832Hyde.mp3~

  14. 2Serenity says Well. I had to relate this to Michael Jackson's audition tape for Berry Gordy because he sings, "I Got that Feelin." I love MJ as much as I love Prince so just don't hate on a sister for loving both!
