Breakdowns for a Funky Friday

Posted over 4 years ago
Breakdowns are what brought me to the funk in the first place. In the early 80's I was all about Hip-Hop. When I found out breaks and breakdowns were the building blocks of Hip Hop, I headed in that direction. Here's two of my favorite breakdowns (literally). There are a bunch of different version of the Parliament tune. This one's a little longer and has a little more Eddie Hazel than others.Check For the Crown Prince of Dance, Rufus Thomas, in comments. For the early history of the Dance "see here":http://www.streetswing.com/histmain/z3brkdwn.htm

  3. mickimicki says Damn... how can I not have this? Need! It's funny how most people these days seem to get into da Funk via Hip Hop - me, too (of course). Gotta remember that point the next time I meet one of the all-around hip-hop-haters. It's not only turning our children into cracksmokin' ho-chasin' graffiti artists... it's also turning them into disciples of the funk. Very well. My sermon for Sunday is fixed!

It's really hard these days to know who your friends are in the world... I feel like poor Condi all of a sudden...

  23. funkjester says yeah, yeah...good stuff. I have to say, I'm glad I stumbled upon Mog and this Funky Friday thang y'all have going on. I seriously doubt I'll take any sides in a Funk War, as Katrina pretty much took my armory down when it wiped out my stuff in storage deep in the heart of the Treme'. I'll likely never get anything close to that back again, but I do make it down to New Orleans 3 or 4 times a year, so I'll take on a role of peaceful, neutral Crescent City Special Agent and chime in with a dossier here and there. I'm partial to that Crescent City beat, for sure. I have a few things here in the storehouse here in Brooklyn, but nothing like what I had before I moved to Northern Cali and got rid of my 800+ wax collection, and then the sourpuss Katrina took a lot of digital from me in her wake, and I always have listened to a wide spectrum of stuff beyond Da Funk. Ah, whatever. Funk Buddha sez: "One groove, one life!"

  24. Cody B says Sorry to hear about your loss jester..NOLA is near and dear to my heart. If you ever want to replace something digital and I have it, lemme know.

  25. funkjester says Ah, wasn't too much of a loss for me, just some material things I had in storage from my culinary and radio careers. I had been out of town and back in New York for a couple of years before the storm hit. So many people lost far more than I, that's for sure. Well, this could be a good thing, Cody. I actually had an internet radio station up and running here in Clinton Hill for a bit, and had a few people involved, but I put it on hiatus for lack of enough stuff to play. One of my hosts is also an all-vinyl girl, which is cool by me, but just makes it cumbersome to get her sets recorded in digital format. I don't know what kind of spare time you'd have, but from the sounds of your postings, would be great to have YOU do a funk show for WBKR! Let me know what you think, and we can exchange some contact info.

  26. cpetersonart3 says Great songs as usual Cody.Speaking of Funky Friday , I remember a mogger when I first signed on about a year ago that would post a list almost every friday of his picks --it was usually about 10- 20 songs however ,now I can't think of his name.
