The Healing Power Of Funk

Posted about 1 year ago
On the regular, I assault this MOG with Funk and Soul obscurities. Mostly I do this because everyone is already familiar with the masters..The Al's, Otis', Aretha's, and JB's of the world.I love the work of all these folks, but I feel like I should expose the breadth of funk n'soul to the folks that might be interested. This week is different though, because sadness came to the MOG, when we found out about Crash. For me the sad news pushed me away from the crates and all music for a couple of days, which is a whole lot for me (and I suspect) many MOG folk. When I wanted (needed) to go back though, I headed for the masters. For me that means a heavy dose of the P Funk and getting back to commenting and participating on MOG. What a relief that was..First I got into my long time argument with the great soulrocket about "what is and what is not funk":http://mog.com/soulrocket/blog_post/120310 then came the "political/LGBT/restaurant franchise/Motown/mind control conversation":http://mog.com/Cody_B/blog_post/120261 with everybody and then "contra melted my face with":http://mog.com/contrabandwidth/blog_post/120333 an Eddie Hazel tribute.Despite all this I can still not define funk, but after paying a visit to Dr. Funkenstein I am feeling a whole lot better. George Clinton said this about the power of funk (he never really defines it either except in the macro:The Big Pill, The Bomb, The One):_"W-E-F-U-N-K y'allNow this is what i want you to do,If you got faults, defects, or shortcomings..You know, like arthritis, rheumatism, or migranesWhatever part of the body it is,I want you to lay it on the radio,Let the vibes flow through,Funk not only moves, it can remove..DIG"_I can't tell you why it works but I prescribe the Funk for your ailments..Take these 2 (album version and live vid from Houston with Maceo and Fred in the dark) and call Dr.Funkenstein in the morning.

  1. mister gary at work again says While I'm still partial to the first three Funkadelic albums as a whole, anything at all P-Funk from the 70's - early 80's is unbelievably worthwhile and always uplifting. I think my fave track might be from Osmium, though - "Come In Out of the Rain" is one of the best tracks I've ever heard.

  2. contrabandwidth says Testify! I'm reconsidering my exile from the mothership. Can you imagine Doobie in your funk?

  3. Cody B says When it comes to P Funk, I tend to look at the music as a long continuum, similar to Zappa's the Big Note. Absolutely, those early records crackle with energy, but I'm saying the communal aspects of the Monster Funk Jams have their purpose and medicinal properties as well. Corny though it may be..the gospel styled vocals on Silent Boatman from Osmium always killed me..I think both Rain and Boatman were "Ruth Copeland":http://mog.com/Cody_B/blog_post/93844 songs.

  4. contrabandwidth says I love the Osmium album. I love the humor too. I think the whole mothership weirdness made P-Funk possibly the best band with a gimmick (you know a back story, like Kiss), ever. You hear those interviews with Clinton talking about how all they did was rotate around different line ups for the different projects, it's crazy! I love that there were a million side projects, man the energy that was flowing. I don't know whether or not he's as crazy as everyone claims, but I'd be burnt out too if I did as much work as he did in the 70's.

  6. Cody B says contra, I think he burned out in so many ways...He was responsible for that whole scene and it must've been pretty daunting. The massive drug use probably didn't help in the long term either. They just got too damn big. I think that messes up a lot of folks.

  7. Cody B says I tell you Michelle, one of the many things Crash did so well was describe the greatness of the classics. He would always find something new and different to say about records you thought the book was closed on.

  8. contrabandwidth says Drugs definitely burn up some extraordinary talent way too fast. Look at Lou Reed's post Velvet output - pretty sparse in the good department. Sly Stones probably another great example.

  9. Cody B says I'm not copping out on the culpability for those cats, but after so much adulation and success, the pressure must be immense,no? Plus so many other people are depending on (although they are contributors) your creativeness for their bread.

  10. contrabandwidth says Definitely a tough position. It must get hard to be a leader of talent like that, you can manage them so much, but you can't control their habits (and sometimes your own) and what not.
