Funky Friday: The Motor Booty Affair

Posted over 2 years ago

The last of the great Parliament LP's, Motor Booty Affair (1978)takes the outerspace themes of prior albums and plunges them down to the bottom of the sea. Mr.Wiggles is your tour guide and DJ, directing you to the hot spots in the revived lost city of Atlantis. Whether you think this album is a socio-political statement referencing the rise of a supposedly lost civilization (Atlantis/Africa), a gem of symphonic vocal arrangement (over 40 distinct voices are heard on the record), a clinic in funk bass playing, a primer for study of late 70's pop culture,a danceable acid flashback set underwater, a comedy record, or just a fish-out-of-water story; know one thing:It is very, very funky. Critical acclaim is not universal for this record, but cover to cover, it is my favorite Parliament album. Sadly though, it was the end of a funk era. May your Friday be drenched in Funk. Here's the hit record from the album Aqua Boogie (A Psychoalphadiscobetabioaquadooloop), which really showcases (esp. the outro) Bernie Worrell's twisted keyboard genius, which was unfortunately edited from 45 and radio versions. In Comments see Bootsy's space bass seduction jam, Motor Booty Affair, and meet George's alter-ego for this record in Mr. Wiggles

  8. Spike says It's always fun to listen to the long swerving notes coming out of Bootsy's bass, so different from the computer-generated drum-thumps that current r&b hip-hop use for bass these days.

  9. Lady Miss Ian says Oh, I feel bathed in an ocean of funk. And I'm motoring my booty around the house. Strangely enough, this reminds me of Christmas, cuz I made a tree ornament out of that picture of George on the dolphins one year. He hung somewhere near the ornament of Lou Reed with blonde hair lighting a cigarette. :-)
