WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

You Left The Water Running

Posted over 2 years ago
The Muscle Shoals songwriter Dan Penn has been involved with some of the greatest moments in R&B, Country, and Pop: At The Dark End Of The Street, Cry Like A Baby, I'm Your Puppet, and Do Right Woman, Do Right Man are just a sampling of the incredible songs he has written. Normaly he worked with Spooner Oldham, but on You Left The Water Running, Fame Studio Owner Rick Hall and the mysterious Oscar Franck are given writing credit. I don't know for sure, but this sounds like some nefarious record biz stuff. Either way, it is a simple, but killer Southern Soul tune. I've got 3 versions for ya'First up is Reggae legend Ken Boothe with his version from the excellent Safe Travel Comp. on Pressure Sounds. In comments please find the Otis Redding version and the songwriters own take on the song from this "comeback" 1999 Live Album

  2. brendanhalpin says Not sure why you're apologizing to Otis; it might be more appropriate to apologize to the other two for posting their versions alongside Otis Redding. Great song, and while all the versions are good---geez, Otis Redding was just so good. Talk about making a song your own; he makes the guy who wrote it sound like he's covering an Otis Redding song. Anyway, thanks for the cool song. It went great with my coffee this Sunday morning.

  3. Cody B says Thanks Brendan..I misspelled Otis' name in the MP3 player is all. Clearly Otis does not need my help. Cheers

  4. soulrocket says original vs. jamaican version plus an extra version i wasn’t familiar with.. i guess i don’t need to explain how much i’m enjoying this post. that is the 2nd volume of phil pratts productions released by pressure sounds, good stuff... not too many big tunes but the production makes for it. perfect sunday post. i’m apologising to ken boothe because brendam was mean to him (just kidding).

  5. Cody B says hey rocket, I don't have a ton of Ken Boothe, but I like what I've heard. found 'em first on the Blood and Fire Soul Comp doing "Is It Because I'm Black":http://mog.com/Cody_B/blog_post/63891 Versions Galore!

  7. soulrocket says i own that compilation too, cody, its a very cool one. ken boothe was a very passionate person who never happened to be lucky with the ladies, the man sometimes creeps me out with his lyrics & the way he cracks his throat in endless pain. tearjerkers galore! still he was the owner of the best voice of jamaica in his era and managed to score big on lists. i like a few of his tunes, including the one you posted.

  8. Bartleby says That's an interest premise to post the cover and the original and let the public judge for themselves. Oddly enough, I'm more convinced by Mr Boothe's version than the second with Spooner Oldham.

  9. ivylander says Cody, dig all three versions muchly - especially the Ken Boothe version, in which his singing is much less mannered and more straightforward than much of his later stuff. Here's a fourth take, not necessarily better than the others, but different and interesting. No doubt you've got it already, but....

  10. Cody B says I didn't have that one,Ivy..Dug it,though. @Bartleby- It was kinda cool that folks backed both Otis and Ken..I really love that Penn/Oldham record though. @Changling-Thanks for dropping back. Always appreciating yer props.

  12. Mike the Knife says Guys, musicology doesn't get much better (and more listenable) than this...

  13. Girlcrawl says Ditto Mike's sentiment: 'doesn't get much better or more listenable'. Having a difficult time choosing one version I favour as all three are fabulous listens yet uniquely spirited (and then ivy adds yet a another version to my mounting confusion) - very different 'personalities' if you will. Excellent posting Cody B - merci!
