My last post was something about me being a
hater. I decided that I hated jazz organs. Hate is a very strong emotion, and I try to reserve the application of hate to something that I am actually passionately against. You know, like baby-rape and stuff. I just can't justify that amount of emotion for a musical instrument.
Ivylander pointed out that Jimmy Smith is responsible for making the Hammond B-3 an accepted jazz instrument. I decided that since I had hated all over jazz organs, the least I could do is listen to Jimmy and form an informed opinion. I really enjoyed the album "Cat". I am listening to "Music for Lovers" right now. This is some good jazz, people. Jimmy Smith is an incredible musician. His sense of melodic interest and spot-on rhythm classify him as an A-1 jazz musician. While he has the ability to skip around the keyboard faster than I can imagine fingers moving, he also knows when fewer notes will say more. I also appreciate the other instruments in the band on both albums. I would classify this as very clean jazz. All that said, I still don't like the sound of organs that much. I can appreciate them, I just don't prefer them. I like the sound of a piano in jazz much more. Thanks, ivylander, for the recommendation. These are some albums that I enjoy, and will listen to, despite the organ. Who knows...maybe I'll even learn to love it?
