I love Jazz! I hate jazz organs...

Posted over 5 years ago
A couple months ago when the local NPR station, KOPB 91.5 FM, was doing their incredibly annoying membership drive, I changed my radio to 89.1 FM, KMHD. It hasn't moved since. They just play a lot of awesome Jazz, have very few commercials, and I haven't been subjected to a membership drive yet. My only complaint is maybe not even a complaint about the radio station, but about Jazz in general. Who decided that organs are valid jazz instruments?I don't like organ solos. Anyway, you can listen to KMHD at kmhd.fm. Even if you're not in the Portland area!

  1. etcvisitor says im fine with organs, its vocal jazz that i cant stand... its like, "shut up, im trying to hear the saxaphonist". i get hooked on the jazz station around here about every third month or so and dont switch for a couple weeks.

  2. CobyHoff says Haha! When I was in college I wanted to sing in a smaller ensemble than the concert choir, so I joined the jazz choir. AAHHHH! The only thing weirder and fruitier than vocal jazz, are jazz vocalists. You'd think the whole world revolved around smoking (cardinal sin for a serious vocalist) and smoking pot. Needless to say, I didn't fit in. I can still stand a little vocal jazz now and then, but once they start to scat, turn it the hell off. Scatting sounds like an instrumentalist going through what they might do the next time they play. Like maybe they're thinking about soloing, but they're in the shower at the time. Look, you got me going again. This makes me seem like an angry intolerant music-listener. Oh well.

  4. CobyHoff says Oh. I guess you're right. I had never heard of him, but apparently he was something. I hate to be one who can't rescind previous opinions, so I'll give this Jimmy guy a chance. I'm not promising anything, though.
