Jaco is/was one of the most amazing electric bassists in the world, the contributions to jazz and fusion in the 13 years before his tragic death are legendary. His sound was unique, very off beat with extensive use of natural and artificial harmonics and textural layering of sounds to broaden the bass range, and the signature moaning that only a fretless bass can deliver. With genius came unstable emotional states that eventually led to an incident in a bar in 1987 that took is life at the age of 35.

  1. Kevbo says 1987? Has it been that long already? Wow. I remember reading of his demise for the first time in Downbeat magazine. I want his hands to be transplanted on to mine.

  2. ChickWithAstick says Jaco Pastorius: Jaco was a tragic genius, and it is stunning his body of work and notariety in only the decade plus that he was performing. If his condition had been diagnosed and treated early on (bipolar I think) we would still have him. . . .but would his music still have been the same. . . .we can only wonder. He died as a result of a bar brawl when his egotistic personality surfaced over a sit-in gig, I believe. -T

  3. Kevbo says Yeah, I remember it was initially unclear what had happened but then after a couple days the pieces were put together and a few rumors about how he was found were cleared up.

  4. samuraijohnny says Thank you for that video. In the church of bass, I bow at the alter of Jaco. He's definitely my strongest influence on the instrument and I'm constantly learning from him . . . especially the video "Modern Electric Bass" which was made before he died. I had that on tape, lost it, then they released it on DVD and as soon as I popped it in, I learned something new once again. I think all bassplayers should at least listen to some Jaco because it would be like a guitarist who's never listened to Jimi. Love Jaco or hate him, I don't think anyone can deny his influence.

  5. ChickWithAstick says Jaco Pastorius: I agree, he was touched by something divine. . . . .but we do have Wooten, Levin, Berlin, Carter, Clarke. . . . . -T
