'A wise man once said your record collection is a reflection of your mind'
Greetings and salutations. My name is Charlie Dark and on occasion I've been known to spin the odd record or two at public functions. Some of you may know me from my Mo Wax Attica Blues days and others may know me from my Blacktronica parties. Most of you probably don’t know me at all and are probably better off for it. I mean playing records for a living is not rocket science and i'm not really down with the 'DJ is God' crew although i'm not one to scorn the trappings of the 'chi chi la la' lifestyle. Unfortunately the days of first class travel, five star hotels and astronomical Dj fees have now passed me by and to be honest i'm happier for it. I can play what I want, when I want to whoever I want in whatever order I want. Which means Public Enemy followed by Africa Brass followed by Dead Prez top and tailed by some crazy Mongolian goat hearding music is all good by me.
So there it is i'm 36 with a ridiculously large record collection, a daughter who'd rather bop around to Girls Aloud than John Coltrane and a tiny terraced house that's bursting at the seams with circles of black plastic and dusty carboard.
Over the years I've some how amassed a record collection verging on the ridiculous aka out of control aka all consuming aka records on the stairs, in the toilet and these days even in the bed!
So in a fit of 'oh my gosh i'm almost 40' it's time to sort my life out i've decided to trawl through the collection, get rid of the dead weight and pair it down to the choicest nuggets. Which means that my local Oxfam shop/Ebay/ and foolish friends are soon to be aquainted with the ones that didn't make it.
You on the other hand will hopefully be witness to the favourites from my collection and the stories behind them. Welcome to 'Have Box Will Travel' hope you enjoy the ride.
