MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Kanye West can be tagged as a hip-hop star, blogger, egomaniac and travel site entrepreneur, but at Tuesday night’s concert at famed Madison Square Garden with a tag team that includes Lupe Fiasco, Rihanna and N.E.R.D., Mr. West proved first and foremost that he is a visionary. Let me, or him for that matter, explain.

“You know we started making all of this two days ago,” Kanye told me. He was talking to me about Rihanna’s re-vamped stage set during sound check. Less than three weeks earlier in Los Angeles, Rihanna’s set proved to be a lackluster affair that followed a psychedelic and energetic set illuminated by N.E.R.D.

As the opener before West’s own set, Rihanna often brought the crowd to their seats for her slow numbers like "Hate That I Love You" and other doozers. Dudes usually went to get beers.

So Kanye threw down some bucks to create an icy wonder world for the foxy pop star.

"It looks good, right?" Kanye asks me about the new stage set-up.

“I like the chandelier," I told him. "It looks like kryptonite.”

“We’re not using it tonight,” Kanye said dressed casually in a white T-shirt and jeans. He'd been chilling at the light board helping program Rihanna's set. "There are three of them and the others can’t go up there.”

But if tweaking her lighting and stage production weren’t enough, Kanye really outdid himself by re-designing all of the good girl gone bad’s stage outfits. A big black ballroom gown inspired by designer Thierry Mugler Kanyes says, comes off mid set to reveal a skin tight black dominatrix outfit. Her dancers also don the skin tight Catwoman leotards along with fencing masks designed by Kanye.

So just add fashion and stage designer to that list above. A review of the entire show is coming.

awesome! i bet Kanye did a great job with the fashion, being that he is such a huge fan of the big designers. if there is one thing Kanye is famous for besides music, it's his involvement in the fashion scene (from JPG and Lagerfield to Takashi Murakami and Kid Robot)...
