MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Radiohead are giving Jack Johnson and Dave Matthews a run for the most eco-conscious rocker title. Last year the band hooked up with carbon footprint analysts Best Foot Forward and figured out the amount of carbon generated on their two previous US tours. But before you rule 'em out at geeks the report showed that fans' travel to and from the shows accounted for the greatest proportion of the CO2 emissions during the tours.

Instead of not touring, which would essentially mean no carbon footprint for Radiohead, but also no cha-ching for them either, the band are encouraging fans to put on their solar-powered Ironman jet-packs to get to their shows. Not really, but here are some of their real suggestions to eliminate carbon emissions:

-consider public transport where available -increased carpooling for shows outside city centers.

After each US show Radiohead encourages fans to post their innovative "methods of travel" (hmmmmm...filling a Toyota Prius with six, or zip-lines from the nearest tallest peak?) on their 'Waste Central' discussion board so "further research can be done on carbon emissions and methods to reduce them."

And if you are feeling all nerdy and want to calculate CO2 emmisions generated by different methods of transport, you can use the band's nifty online calculator at Radiohead.com. Happy calculating.

Any Moggers have any eco-friendly ideas for transportation?

Seriously, though, I will be seeing Radiohead at Lollapalooza, and I'll be taking the L to that.

I'm sure people are gonna blow this up into something more than it is, but I'm glad to see someone addressing this issue.

I would say one of the things that made me give up on most music festivals was my final Phish concert, The Lemon Wheel, in Limestone Maine. The place was just trashed and disgusting afterward. And most of these fans were usually considered eco-conscious. I lost a little faith in humanity, and was disgusted by peoples selfishness to just leave stuff for someone else to clean up. Sad thing at how every inhibition seems to go by the way side for some at concerts.

considering what parking costs at some of these places (I've seen $40 on Ticketmaster), why wouldn't you carpool.

Taking the train/Light Rail to see them at Liberty State Park (All Points West concert)...it's just sooo much more convenient and a LOT quicker getting home!

Considering the cost of gas and ticket, people may have to walk to the shows.
