While the Coen brothers' No Country For Old Men swept the Oscars in the Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actor and Adapted Screenplay categories, it was Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, the independent musicians behind the movie Once, who took home the statuette for Best Original Song.
The pair, who tour under the name the Swell Season when Hansard isn't touring with his other band the Frames, beat out Disney composer and eight time Academy Award winner Alan Menken, who had been nominated three times in the category for music from the Disney film Enchanted at last night's 80th Oscar ceremony.

Hansard and Irglova's tune "Falling Slowly," which the two performed during the telecast, took home the Oscar for the pair. Accepting the award, Hansard reminisced about how the film was made for only 100,000 in three weeks using to Handi-cameras. Irglova's speech was cut short, but host Jon Stewart of The Daily Show brought her back out after a commercial break to let her speak. This is such a big deal, not only for us, but for all independent musicians and artists who spend so much of their time struggling," Irglova said.
Dario Marianelli won for the Best Original Score Oscar for his work in Atonement.

A pleasant movie and a nice song. In my view, the Academy folks got it right this time.

I guess. Still think Eddie Vedder (Into The Wild) and Jonny Greenwood (There Will Be Blood) should have gotten nods.

I am very happy that they won! Truly deserving. I posted a review of The Swell Season concert in Portland, a Once movie review and also a bit about last night on my blog. You’ll just have to scroll down on the right side and click on the “Glen Hansard” label to find all of it. http://isorski.blogspot.com/
