The Purple One is giving a big finger to SONY BMG in the UK. Instead of doing what bands normally do and releasing his new album Planet Earth on said release date (July 16th in the UK, July 24th in the US), Prince has struck a deal with UK publication The Mail on Sunday that will release the CD with the paper in the UK only.Prince's 10-track Planet Earth will be dispensed as a "covermount" with an unspecified edition of the The Mail on Sunday. Prince will also give away thousands of copies of the new album at his 21-date London O2 Arena residency starting August 1st.Its bad for music retailers and labels, but these types of newspaper/musician deals will definitly get the kids reading the paper. Because of the deal with the newspaper the Prince album will NOT be released anywhere in the U.K. "It's a one-off situation," a spokesperson for the label said. "We're just trying to produce the best possible content we can do, and give it to an audience who clearly have an appetite for it," the publication's managing director, Stephen Miron, insisting he meant no trouble told Billboard.com. "And what we are also able to demonstrate is we can stimulate that appetite, and people then go on to fulfill their appetite with extra product, be it album sales, DVD sales, concert tickets or whatever."Someone, Paul Quirk, co-chairman of the U.K.'s Entertainment Retailers Association, already called it, ""...The Artist formerly known as Prince should know that with behavior like this, he will soon be the Artist Formerly Available in Record Stores.""Purple Rain," Prince at the 2007 Super Bowl Halftime showSource: http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003605696
