Fame sells when it comes to advertising. The Gap brand reinvented itself when it used Scarlett Johansson and Ashton Kutcher in ads, and Audrey Hepburn to sell their black skinny pants recently. Budget clothing house H&M sold out of their collections for Madonna and Stella McCartney, the designer daughter of Paul McCartney. Now Doc Martens UK will be using the likes of Kurt Cobain, Joey Ramone, Joe Strummer and Sid Vicious to sell their durable boots with some rock appeal. “We wanted to communicate that Dr. Martens boots were ‘made to last’ and we discovered that these idolized musicians wore them,” the campaign’s writer told NME.com. The ads depict the rockers as angels wearing the boots. “Showing them still wearing their Docs in heaven dramatized the boots’ durability perfectly. And, as images, they felt very iconic.” The ads will only be used in the UK, so us Americans will just have to appreciate Michael Jordan in his signature pumps some more.
