NYE Concert Guide: Ring In '09 With A Band

Posted 11 months ago

Two nights ago I scored myself a $30 ticket ($10 under face value) 2 minutes before My Morning Jacket took the stage at the Chicago Theater. It was very last minute and due the monsoon-ing winter rain the place wasn't packed despite being stamped sold out two months ago. The atmosphere was relaxed, with security not even budging me from my guerrilla spot in the aisle, next to the fourth row, but the moral of this story is that out of the 7 or so times I've seen MMJ play it was the best they've ever been at their game. EVER.

This made me supremely jealous of all my NYC buddies who already have their tickets to see a beardless Jim James and co. rock New Years Eve at Madison Square Garden, "the world's most famous arena." Lucky f#%kers are in for one hell of a night. This thought then made me scour to see if in fact there were any shows I could rock my pants off to in the ol' Windy City last minute. And now here you have it...two cups of coffee and an hour later (thanks P-fork and a revamped Pollstar.com), a complete list of the nation's NYE concerts.

Moggers, where's the party at??

Apart from MMJ @ MSG, I think the show to catch is Claypool, Fite, and Zappa Plays Zappa.

All three blew me away at one time or another in 2008.

Seems like mega-biz as usual in most places - except L.A., which is lookin' a bit feeble concert-wise compared to most of the other major cities. Besides Oakenfold who I caught doing a set in the early fall, nothing to write home about. (Pink Martini at the Disney Concert Hall? Too much. At a fancy supper club, maybe.) Not that I'll be leaving Monterey this New Year's Eve.

Ah well. Have a ball, y'all!
