Shins Frontman Working Towards His First Oscar?

Say what? Remember that little band called the Shins. Despite owing Zach Braff their souls, the Portland-based via Albuquerque, New Mexico indie rockers haven't put out any new music in almost two years. Today an explanation as to why surfaces. Seems frontman James Mercer has put down the guitar and pen and has gone all "All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up" on us.
Mercer will star in the Matt McCormick-directed movie Some Days Are Better Than Others (yes, that's also the title of a U2 song). McCormick is no stranger to Mercer, having directed videos for the Shins' Oh, Inverted World track "The Past And Pending" and Wincing the Night Away's "Australia," where Mercer's performance pretty much secured the lead role in the full-length feature. Also in the flick Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney fame.
In an interview with Pitchfork McCormick says the film is about "about lonely people trying to create their own abstract forms of communication" and admitted that the film wasn't necessarily based on Mercer that "it was just James' face that was in my head when writing this character."
Come to think of it Merceris a dead ringer for Oscar winner Kevin Spacey. Would you go see this movie?
