Roy Orbison Channels Kevin Bacon's Six Degrees Of Separation Game On His Website

Posted about 1 year ago

Roy Orbison's website has launched the game Six Degrees of Roy Orbison, where you can enter any artist's name and find their connection to the "Pretty Woman" singer.

Entering "Bob Dylan" provided the obvious response that he "performed with Roy Orbison in the Traveling Wilburys, saying that Roy 'transcended all genres' and that 'he sang like a professional criminal." So next I tried something a little more out there, like "Kanye West."

According to the Orbison Website, "Kanye West on 'Homecoming' collaborated with Chris Martin of Coldplay. Coldplay are heavily influenced by U2. U2 wrote 'She's a Mystery to Me,' which appeared on Roy Orbison's last album 'Mystery Girl'.
"
Punching in My Morning Jacket provided no immediate result, but a space to place who the artist was influenced by. I wrote in Pearl jam and from there this result was: "my morning jacket was influenced by pearl jam. Pearl Jam were heavily inspired by the pre-grunge sound of The Pixies. The Pixies singer Frank Black included on his first solo album a version of 'Hang on to your Ego' by The Beach Boys. The Beach Boys songwriter Brian Wilson said his major rivals were The Beatles. Beatles Opened for Roy Orbison on his 1963 tour in England and were lifelong friends, specifically George Harrison, who played with Roy in the Traveling Wilburys."

Some other fun ones:

Madonna: Madonna sang at the 2005 Tsunami Aid concert a cover of 'Imagine' by John Lennon of The Beatles. The Beatles opened for Roy Orbison on his 1963 tour in England and were lifelong friends, specifically George Harrison, who played with Roy in the Traveling Wilburys.

The Pixies: The Pixies singer Frank Black included on his first solo album a version of 'Hang on to your Ego' by The Beach Boys. The Beach Boys songwriter Brian Wilson said his major rivals were The Beatles. Sonic Youth: Sonic Youth were influenced by, among other bands, The Velvet Underground. The Velvet Underground were influenced by, among other artists, Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan Performed with Roy Orbison in the Traveling Wilburys, saying that Roy 'trancended all genres' and that 'he sang like a professional criminal.

This is starting to get repetitive. To try it yourself head on over to Roy Orbison.com.

Someone channels the game on the Roy Orbison website...

Might have warned us that it was going to autoplay a song; i like Pretty Woman, but i hate pages that autoplay without any warning.

And it told me to enter a name, all right - but i couldn't find where.

Maybe i'll go back and try it with Firefox.

That is a spectacuarly badly-designed site.

Coldplay being "highly influenced by U2" really shouldn't count although it's not a bad idea.

I tried this, and found it pretty fun...the autoplay was a little irritating, but I love these connections game.

In a related note, did anyone read the report that (I believe) came out of Stamford university.  It says that with the advent of cellular and internet networking that any two people, famous or otherwise, are seperated by approximately six degrees.

It is a small world after all...but I wouldn't want to paint it.

I agree that Coldplay being "highly influenced by U2" really shouldn't count.  But "Chris Martin of Coldplay sang on the Band Aid 20 version of 'Do They Know It's Christmas Time?' with Bono of U2" gets you the same effect.

While I'm at it, here's (in my opinion) a less questionable My Morning Jacket to Roy Orbison solution: http://tinyurl.com/9t5z2y

If you don't want to click through the link:

My Morning Jacket's Jim James on an M. Ward record

    M. Ward on a Neko Case record

Neko Case's record also has Garth Hudson on it

    Garth Hudson with Bob Dylan

Dylan with Orbison in the Travlling Wilburys

OK, I'll shut up now.  Maybe.
