Would You Watch An Anthony Kiedis Inspired TV Show?

Posted about 1 year ago

Anthony Kiedis must be pissed Californication is already taken. The Red Hot Chilli Peppers frontman is going to have to settle with the tentative title Scar Tissue (also the title of Kiedis' recent autobiography) for his new TV series. According to Variety.com, Keidis is developing an HBO series based in the 70s on his crazy rock and roll childhood.

Moving to West Hollywood, CA from the Midwest as a kid? Check.

Drug dealer dad? Check.

Drug dealer dad, named Spider, who sold drugs and mingled with rock stars (like Led Zeppelin and the Who) on the Sunset Strip, all while aspiring to get into showbiz? Check. Check and check.

Keidis, who might narrate and even make cameos in the series, told Daily Variety that working on the project is like the "last great hurrah" for him and Spider (his father.)

"He introduced me to the arts, to a more culturally magnificent life," Kiedis says of his dad. "But some of it was this heavy, adult matter that I wasn't quite capable of digesting. ... It was a very rich but kind of challenging period of my life. I was thrust into this adult mentality by age 11."

Kiedis and the shows two other executive producers - Marc Abrams and Michael Benson - whose credits include the HBO hit Entourage, are currently shopping for a writer for the script. (Call me up, bitches!)

Sound like a good idea, or an obvious Entourage knock-off based in the music scene?

I thought it would be a reality series, which would be horrible.  Could be interesting.  I'm always wary of self promoted projects like this though.  I thought his dad's name was Blackie Dammett?

I think it could be great.  I don't necessarily think it's going to be an Entourage rip off, because it will focus on Kiedis' life before he was famous and Entourage jumps in when Vincent Chase is already a rising star.  I was always interested in Kiedis' life, but couldn't make it through his book "Scar Tissue."  Not sure if anybody out there has read it, but I got through the first 50 or so pages and thought it was so boring. This was a couple years ago, so I'll probably try reading it again before the show comes out and give it a second chance.

I read the book and thought it was really good and insightful....it was pretty shocking in many parts.  I'd watch the show.

Just when I was about to reconcile my personal differences over/with him, he comes out with new beef for me to have... oh dear...

There was me thinking TV series Californication (which I absolutely love) was already kind of about him (Porsche-driving 40-something whose best work lies behind him in the past, nursing himself through midlife-crisis with very young girls... Hank Moody? or Anthony Kiedis?) but I guess neither that series nor his autobiography were quite enough of an ego-massage for him yet.

And why hire a scriptwriter? I mean, hey, call me, I'm available, but beneath his arrogant exterior obviously still lies the same insecurity that already led him to use a ghostwriter for his book; whatever my personal beef with you, Tony, I am convinced you have great creative linguistic talent and are good enough to write your own books and scripts; now stop making me nauseaous and start proving it to yourself and the world.

Anyway, would I watch it? True to my hypocrite self, ABSOLUTELY!

PS: Yes, his dad's name is Blackie, and yes, I did read the book (with regret, I may add).

I would watch every episode and own the dvds just cause I love the chili peppers, but I have also read his book which is really why I think the show would be a hit.  As far as autobiographies go (personally a genra I usually avoid) it seems like a work of fiction because of the crazy life he had growing up.

If you like the peppers I highly reccomend the book as it gives some good insight and will only leave you liking them more. As for the show I really hope they give Anthony a lot of control, because nothing would suck more than a crappy show about your own life.  I'm sure it will be good, and I will be watchng.

Sounds pretty cool, Kiedis has made some awesome cameos in the past in several films.  Hopefully Flea gets some shots in there as well. He was a great annihilist in The Big Lebowski.

I am actually going to get HBO to be able to see this.  The book was very interesting. He survived his crazy life growing up.  More power to him.  Of course we'll see Flea.  Love them all!

This would be awesome. His autobiography is "sex, drugs and rock n roll" his life is one of opulence, opportunity and utter luck..

    ridiculious life, ridic..

Still anticipating this with mixed feelings, worried HBO might focus too much on the feel-good factor, entertainment value, of his childhood leaving out the reality that followed in his adulthood (when he screwed himself up to within an inch of his life) and glamorizing things in the process -- http://mog.com/Jo/blog/240804. The thought of that worries me to the point of feeling frightened of the message any such series could be sending out.

I don't know, if the show was on basic cable, I would definetely check it out...but my proletariat ass doesn't jibe with premium TV services.

Premise sounds interesting though...and I bet I end up acquiring the inevitable soundtrack.

Could be interesting depending on how it's done. Hopefully more a story about "making it" in music and the nitty gritty of the underground as opposed to a glorified drug story.  Glorified drug stories are so 90's.

I hope it's just like his book, which is a glorified drug story of a Rock Star! the book was amazing and the tv show will be too, especially if it's done by the guys who did entourage, this is going to be amazing and I can't wait!
