Cream's Jack Bruce Disses Led Zeppelin

Posted about 1 year ago

Cream bassist Jack Bruce ran his mouth off in an anti- Led Zeppelin tirade in an interview with the music Web site Classic Rock. Bruce, who reunited Cream - Bruce, guitarist Eric Clapton and drummer Ginger Baker - for several concerts back in 2005, threw the word "crap" around in and interview, referencing Led Zeppelin and Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page.

Bruce first positively answered a question about another Cream reunion , mentioning the edition of Todd Rundgren but didn't specifiy an exact time frame.
"Well, the trouble is that I'm doing so many amazing things on my own," Bruce said. "Cream is just a band from many, many years ago, and we did do something [referring to the reunion shows in 2005]… "

Then he took it too the next level. "Everybody talks about Led Zeppelin, and they played one fucking gig - one fucking lame gig - while Cream did weeks of gigs; proper gigs, not just a lame gig like Zeppelin did, with all the [vocal] keys lowered and everything. We played everything in the original keys. [Becoming animated]: Fuck off, Zeppelin, you're crap. You've always been crap and you'll never be anything else. The worst thing is that people believe the crap that they're sold. Cream is 10 times the band that Led Zeppelin is."

Bitter much? The interviewer caught on and commented with a "That's a bold opinion." To which Bruce replied,"What? You're gonna compare Eric Clapton with that fucking Jimmy Page? Would you really compare that? ... Eric's good and Jimmy's crap. And with that I rest my case."

Angry, angry, old man.

Well...if anyone, Jack Bruce-who was there, has a right to say that.  You don't have to agree, but I'll give him the right to say it...

"He also coulda been drunk" Perfect Charley!

Only logical explanation for the momentary madness he so obviously suffered. Ha!

Ha! That's messed up. He's got a point though, Page is sloppy next to slow hand..then again, who isn't? Both epic bands. I say duke it out.

This is an example of the Narcissism of Minor Differences.  People or organizations often harbor surprisingly hostile obsessions toward others who are almost like them, but are indifferent toward others who are more different.

Richard Thompson?  Frank Zappa? (Though Frank preferred to refer to himself as "a composer who operates a guitar" rather than as a guitarist.)  Ray Benson?  Junior Brown?  Bill Kirchen?

(Though RT is the only one of those who i'd directly compare to EC in terms of what he plays...)

My own personal opinion is that i pretty much agree with JB.

I refer you to my post from December 2006 about Magical Misery Tour...

I think Jack Bruce's best work has been outside of Cream. He did a brilliant series of albums with Kip Hanrahan, most now out of print. Same with Robert Plant--his duets with Allison Krause and his solo group of a few years ago are much better than his work with the Led. I am a liitle disappointed in the hostility; I think Jack is the more musically interesting of the two bass players but for rock n roll technique, perhaps the late Entwhistle of the Who had the most going for him...

I think BB is totally right on. I have all of jack's solo work and constantly listen to it. I think Jack has had a lot of personal trials and it is disappointing for him to to go on like that.

    Let's settle this one simply.

Led Zepplin:  One of the best known names in modern music from the last century.  Known not only for creating amazing music, but becoming a cultural icon, complete with laser light shows, artwork and tribute bands dedicated to them.

Cream:  Bring them up to your average music listener from this decade and you'll be lucky if you get "...didn't they sing that white room/black curtains song???.

    Case closed.

But then again, I'm an evil fuck.
