Phil Lesh & Warren Haynes Surprise At HeadCount Benefit

Posted about 1 year ago

The line-up for Head Count's Election Eve Get Out To Vote party included ?uestlove, Joss Stone, Robert Randolph, Stanton Moore and other folks from the jamband scene. It was enough to pack NYC's Highline Ballroom, but it was the surprise, unannounced acts that stole the show. At 1 AM the venue started to weed out, but those patient enough for a really late-night encore were able to catch Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh, already in town for his second annual Philathon, a 14-night stint at the Nokia Theatre, and none other than Allman Brothers and Gov't Mule guitarist Warren Haynes power through a three-song set.

Medeski, Martin and Wood keyboardist John Medeski, who also played earlier during the Disco Biscuits surprise set, and Stanton Moore joined Lesh and Haynes for a raucous version of the GD tune "Franklin's Tower." Before shooing everyone out to the voting booths, Phil Lesh and co. powered through the Buffalo Springfield tune "For What It's Worth" and the bluesy "Turn on Your Lovelight."
