Should Led Zeppelin Tour Without Plant?

Posted about 1 year ago

News broke this week that the remaining Led Zeppelin members John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page, along with drummer Jason Bonham, son of late Zep drummer John Bonham were thinking of hitting the road and recording a new album. The only problem? They "are trying out a couple of singers" John Paul Jones told BBC Radio 4. Seems the threesome are eager to get back on stage, even if it means leaving behind frontman Robert Plant. Plant has spent the past year touring with Alison Krauss behind their Grammy-winning Raising Sand collaboration.

Rumors have suggested Alter Bridge vocalist Myles Kennedy and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler coudl step in for Plant. Jones, Page and Bonham had apparently been rehearsing in hopes that Plant would step back into the picture, but no such luck.

"We want to do it." Jones continued. "There's no point in just finding another Robert. You could get that out of a tribute band, but we don't want to be our own tribute band."

Do you think Led Zeppelin should tour without Robert Plant?

Call it The Firm 2.  Zep without Plant would truly be a Momentary Lapse of Reason.

Lame! What's the point? I figure unless there is a better reason that he couldn't play like, um, oh I don't know.. if he were DEAD, then yes, but if not then what's the hurry? I think they shouldn't jump the gun on this one.

i agree.  Zep without Plant is a different band.

I always found Plant annoying and whiny, post Led Zep 3 - but when I saw The Firm, I missed Plant... he's the perfect match for Page.  Nothing against Paul Rodgers... he's just not Plant and Zeppelin w/o the Plant/Page dynamic is a Zep cover band.

If its Page, Jones, Bonzo Jr... it HAS to have Plant.

Sure, just don't call it Led Zeppelin. Get all these vocalists who are rumored to be jamming with Page, JPJ and son of Bonham and go out as an "Evening Of Led Zeppelin Music" or form another band. If Percy doesn't want to participate, that's his choice, but it shouldn't stop the other three from going out on tour. Public demand would determine whether or not it would be a financial success.

I agree with Nightwatcher. If they want to play, then let them play, just don't try to sell us that it's Led Zeppelin. I'm sure plenty of people will show up no matter what, but they can do themselves a favor by simply using another name. Especially when it comes to a new album.

Think of all the criticism Axl could have spared himself just by using a name other than GNR. He might not have sold out stadiums with "The Axl Rose" band name, but no one will ever be sold that his latest incarnation is really guns n roses. Same goes for Led Zep. These guys have to realize that we are not THAT stupid.

Dear God...PLEASE don't call it Led Zeppelin if you're touring without Robert Plant.  Look at the godawful example of "Queen" with Paul Rodgers, or "The Doors" with Ian Astbury.  These bands are sullying their once great reputations by touring with singers that don't have any business being a part of that legacy.  Just find another name, for crying out loud.  I can't express how sad I would be to see "Led Zeppelin" with Steven Tyler singing, or (GOD HELP ME) that yahoo from Alter Bridge.  They're not even a GOOD BAND!!  Please don't S@%T on the good Led Zeppelin name this way.  I mean, you're only one of my favorite bands EVER.

Hell no, this is high Blasphemy. Zep without Plant is not Zep. Go ahead and tour under another name, how about Headless Zep.

Though it would be a legendary reunion to see the Zep reunited in top form, Page and Plant toured without calling themselves Zeppelin so why should Page and Jones call themselves Zeppelin? Having seen Jones I can comfortably say he's a monster player who's been active as a Producer in recent years but that has been sorely missed on the scene as a player. Jason Bonham on the other hand has proven himself to be a mere shadow of his father on stage thus far. The reality is that it's really not Zeppelin without Plant. The boys might just get away with it htough using a known star vocalist such as Aerosmith's Tyler but it's a bit of a stretch...

I always gave LZ credit for calling it quits after John Bonham died.  They knew it wouldn't really be Led Zeppelin without him.  Now they want to tour with neither Bonzo nor Plant?  Go ahead, but just don't call it Led Zeppelin--it isn't Led Zeppelin.

I credit Plant for following his muse with Alison Krauss and continuing to explore poor white people's music (Like he and Page did back with Zep with poor black people's music.) He's got more money then he will spend in his lifetime and appears to still wants to continue to be creatively inspired. Good for him.

I'm a bit surprided that Page hasn't done more with his obvious talents and is looking for the obvious nostalgic buck.

Absolutely... Positively ... Undoubtedly ...All-Encompassingly.... BULLSHIT.

Hey Jimmy, you wanna rock? Start a NEW BAND. Get Jason and John for it, if you want. And hell, when you tour? Play Zeppelin tunes, why not?

But if you want to retain our respect, give us new music, and, for fuck's sake, don't call it Led Zeppelin.

I don't know about the steven tyler thing but they should/could find a singer that could whale like plant did in the 70's. I saw page/plant in the 90's and page rocked. Plant was good but not like in his youth. I'm down, unless the tix are more than 100bucks.
