WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Seattle Taking "City Of Music" Title

Posted about 1 year ago

Austin's the live music capitol of the world. Nashville is home to country and Seattle, well, it's just grabbing the overall title when it comes to music.

Next Wednesday, October 29th, Seattle mayor Greg Nickels will announce a long-term strategy to make Seattle The City Of Music. Over the next 12 years they'll be creating little rock stars in the school system, investing in music education during the school day, where government funding in tough times usually gets cut. The city is teaming with its major tech companies (i.e. Microsoft, Amazon, Real Networks) and integrating music and technology. They even plan on offering health care to musicians. (that's awesome!)

The October 29th kick off party is open to the public as long as you RSVP to the invite here.

But can Seattle hold the title? Is it what you think of when you hear The City Of Music? Sure its got music festivals like Bumbershoot, Folklife and the Capitol Hill Block Party. Then there's the labels: Barsuk, Suicide Squeeze and Loveless. Sub Pop started there. Its home to bands like Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix, Death Cab For Cutie and more.

Personally, I think this is a great plan and all cities should follow suit.

uh... someone better tell Seattle that Nashville has been "Music City" since forever....

Bristol, TN is the Birthplace of Country Music - but Nashville, home of the Grand Ole Opry is just plain ole Music City and has been for time immemoriam, regardless of genres.

"The City of Music" is really a passive iteration of the term, as long as you're asking.

Whoever earned their million dollars for that term really should have leveraged Seattle's "Emerald City" monikor and extended the gem metaphor.

Get Seattle's Mayor and City Council on the phone! Their marketing people are slacking off.

And to note, the Seattle scene is moving down to Portland for some reason, they must have issues in Seattle that are making it more livable in thier more hospitable southern NW twin?

What they should do if they really want to hang on to this self imposed title  is to make it worth while financially for studios and labels  to set up shop in the city, encourage musicians to move in with cheap rents, set up an industry health care system (great idea, but does it float) make it easier for venues to open so people can hear/see live music. Essentially they should make Seattle the Hollywood of the music industry.

That doesn't sound like a very good idea when you think about it.

considering that seattle is possibly the heroin abuse capitol of the west, its about time someone decided to give health care to a group of people who might need it the most.

every city should have economic and quality of life incentives within it to foster their own arts scene.

in places where the regular, staid industries have faded or gone bust, the culture industry has blossomed.

every city should simply provide SOMETHING for the taxes they collect.. and not just for the mainstream....
