Dave Grohl is known as being one of the nicest and coolest dudes in the music business. So when he and the rest of his band the Foo Fighters start sending out press releases denouncing the McCain camp you know the nice guy's pissssssed off!
After hearing that McCain had been using the Foos song "My Hero" at campaign rallies without the consent of the band, its management, label or publishers, the band have released the following statement:
"This isn't the first time the McCain campaign has used a song without making any attempt to get approval or permission from the artist. It's frustrating and infuriating that someone who claims to speak for the American people would repeatedly show such little respect for creativity and intellectual property. The saddest thing about this is that 'My Hero' was written as a celebration of the common man and his extraordinary potential. To have it appropriated without our knowledge and used in a manner that perverts the original sentiment of the lyric just tarnishes the song. We hope that the McCain campaign will do the right thing and stop using our song--and start asking artists' permission in general!"
The music scene is really hating on the McCain/Palin ticket!

I agree. Using an artist's song without permission is one thing, but "My Hero?" I agree, that just shits on a really beautiful song.
It's great a congressman like McCain is responsible for writing the copyright laws in favor of the large labels/publishing houses/media conglomerates, and yet shows how little he (or the people under him) understands it.
Now if I make a YouTube video with pictures of my cat to that song, I can recieve a DMCA takedown notice, with the possability of prosecution. I'm sure Grohl wouldn't care, but his label would.
I guess the answer is, as long as your in power, it's okay.
update: apparently jackson browne is also pissed the mccain camp used his "runnin' on empty" on his campaign trail.
