Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon Launches Mirror/Dash Clothing Line

Posted about 1 year ago

Yet another reason to love Kim Gordon. The Sonic Youth bassist and mother of one has launched her own clothing line, Mirror/Dash, named after her side-project with hubby and fellow Sonic Youth guitarist Thurston Moore.

Gordon, a staple at designer Marc Jacobs' fashion shows, started the line with friends Melinda Wansbrough and Jeffrey Monteiro. The inspiration is "clothes for cool moms." The trio have one piece of clothing, a military-style wool jacket, up for sale at MirrorDash.com. and plan on adding more through the year. Dubbed the Hardy Jacket, after French songbird Françoise Hardy, the coat will cost you $415.00 and only 50 will be sold.

"I know, every designer says they're inspired by Françoise Hardy," Gordon told the NY Times. "But I've been listening to her records for 15 years."

As for the limited stock, "Some people make limited-edition records — we're making a limited-edition jacket," Gordon kid.

didn't kim & thurston have a clothing store in NYC something like 10 or 15 years ago?  i seem to recall that.... it was on lafayette on the ground floor of the building they lived in... i lived around the corner and passed by 2-3 times a day but never went in because i didn't think the clothes suited me ---  i can't be imagining this.  or maybe it was the beastie boys store?  (XL and/or grand royal) and kim sold some items there?

any other soho residents and habituees remember this?

I think this is cool for rich 'wanna be cool' mums.  If you don't have a spare $415 in your back pocket and have to resort to the family allowance I guess you've gotto find other ways to be cool like getting out your sewing machine and coming up with your own designs.  I suppose there might be more chance of it fitting if you make it yourself so there are some benefits to not having buckets of money.

Seriously though, this is a fun idea if you have that kind of money to spend on yourself and you are very quick to act on your desire to own one of these jackets, after all there are only 50 being sold.

I'm not a big fan of this particular design, lets see what they put out as a limited edition next, maybe I'll have won the lottery by then :-)

looking back at that jacket.... its rather boxy.  not at all feminine.  i always thought of francoise hardy as rather femme... even in boxy clothes.  sorry kim.  my $415 wardrobe expenses will go buy me 10 isaac mizrahi items at target....  maybe it takes a gay man to make really feminine clothes?  i mean... christian dior's were the ultimate feminine clothes... and coco chanel - a leading lady entrepreneur from way way back.... all the designs she's noted for are boxy or gamine-like.  no shape, no curves.  give me dior's new look any day.

i guess wannabe cool moms want their gamine back? (ie: tomboy, no curves look)

"10 isaac mizrahi items at target" -- lol! i totally understand what you mean. my best investment of the summer was this pair of red lace-up sneaks from wal-mart for $5! seriously $5! me and my bff got 'em at the walmart across the street from bonnaroo. loves them. you can be chic for cheap, that is for sure.

and you are right i picture hardy as more of a pink chiffon than a dark wool.
