MOG MOG

BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

America really loves (and misses) its boy bands. Following Young Jeezy's aptly-titled Number One album The Recession on the charts this week was none other than The New Kids on The Block!

NKTOB sold 95,000 copies of their first album in fourteen years The Block. Normally I'd applaud such a feat. Afterall, as much as I hate to admit it, Teen Bop photos of NKOTB covered the door to my room when I was 8. But, that's were I'd like to keep NKOTB - in my age eight memories. When a friend asked if I wanted to check them out on tour in October, I passed. My musical palette has since been ...refined. But the boy band business doesn't stop there. According to new reports *NSYNC might get back together. (This is a very bad dream I am having, right?) And all this comes after this weekend's VMA show, where Britney Spears apparently "killed it" leaving everyone to believe she's on the right track to a comeback.

Does this sound crazy to anyone else? What happened to the indie rock heyday?

Old (slightly rude) joke:

Q: What has a hundred legs and no pubic hair?

A: The front row at a New Kids on the Block concert.

The Britney Spears thing still bewilders me.  3 awards?  Video of the year?  Ummm...what the fuck?!!?

"Piece of Me"?  Was this song even hot?  Was this the big hit of the summer, and I just missed it?  I swear, I may have heard this song 3 times, and I'm sure it was never in its entirety.  I've heard of artists being shoved down our throats, but this is going way too far.

Quick - somebody find that Youtube video clip of Cartman when he wanted to be in a "boy band".  The song was hilarous!  Its was all "girrl" this and "girrl" that.

I gotta say that Richard Thompson managed to make Britny's Oops I Did It Again sound almost like a Real Song.

i kinda think that MTV gave her the 3 awards because of what happened the year before - her awful performance in las vegas. it's like they felt bad and decided to  help her get her career off the ground again after they helped f it up last time.

There's a time and place for everything, I guess.

Among girlfriends, in our younger years, we pledged our ritual challenges to each other to move out of childhood and into adulthood, so, for instance for one of the friends' 17th birthday we went to male strippers' show (a full-size picture of us sitting front row appeared in the next day's paper - now they'd never do that @ Peppermint Hippo, would they?), for another girl's 18th we arranged a McDonalds Kids Party (strictly instructing staff to treat her like they would any 4-year-old birthday girl), and for my 21st I was taken to a Backstreet Boys concert.  Then we moved on.

But I only have to take a look around the local town center on any given Friday night to realize that there are plenty of 30-plussers who, in their dress sense and behavior, have either never made that move-on, or are desperately trying to re-live their childhood years.

While middle-aged women referring to each other as 'girls', or nightclubs throwing "school disco" nights may make me cringe, there are truck loads of money to be made today for yesteryear's child stars and boybands, and I can't blame them for milking the cash cows while they're there - good luck to them, I'd say!

@DaveCromwell: Is this the video you were looking for?:
