WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Frank Zappa Was Not Cookoo, He Was A GENIUS

Posted about 1 year ago

Crap. I can't find my favorite Frank Zappa clip on YouTube. It's his musical performance of "I'm the Slime" from the '76 season of Saturday Night Live. It's a classic. Back when there was no CGI or special effects, Zappa managed to have slime ooze out over a TV on the set. But, it doesn't exactly ooze, it more like streamed down the TV set. Whatever speed the slime fell at the track is my favorite Zappa tune.

I recently read somewhere that Zappa was pushed off stage by a fan at a '71 London show, leaving him with head trauma, serious fractures, a banged up back, leg, and neck. His larynx was even f'ed resulting in a lower voice for the rest of his life. Crazy! The guy played on and released his classics Sheik Yerbouti and Joe's Garage among many, many, many others.

Following up on the crazy/genius posts by Brittanybf, mollifire and Pinkerton, I just wanted to say I think Frank Zappa was genius. Sure Zappa, could be regarded as the mad scientist of music, always messing with noise and vouching against censorship. Sure he sported a crazy handlebar moustache, and gave his kids some weird names - Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet Emuukha Rodan and Diva Thin Muffin Pigeen- but how can you listen to the clip below and not think it's genius. It's 15 years after Zappa's death and his music is still being made relevant to society in this YouTube video …

its nice to see that i'm not the only one who loves Frank. I'm the Slime was the first song i was exposed to, i actually saw the SNL episode (and have it on tape too). ever since i saw that rerun of Frank's performance i've tried to gather all his songs. Recently i found a person who owns all the music... maybe i'll get it from him.

Get him, don't get him, it doesn't really matter.  In a world of art and commerce he leaned heavily toward art..genius.

yeah, cody. i bought "joe's garage" years ago in an effort to try and "get him." it didn't really work. that was back in college. cut to four lyears ater. i was really surprised at myself when i heard "I'm the Slime" and how much i LOVED it. that's why i'm thinking there are some zappa tunes, in comparison to others (his live stuff with the Mothers...) that more appealing, if you will.

trend, glad to know that you know exactly what i'm talking abuout. the ray charles epiosode from that year is also a HUGE contender for favorite SNL musical performance! after i watched that all i could say was "ray charles was the man!"

He's also a fun cat to be a fan of..so much material to explore.  If you don't like one thing, the next might be completely different.  Seldom, to my ears, can killer musicianship be so fun to listen to.

Yeah, FZ is a prime example of someone who could have tempered some of his releases, kind of like Prince.  Genius, yes, but do we need every note?  This is wh authors have editors.

Great to see Frank around here again, If you tire of his 50 or so regular releases there's always the bootlegs
