DNC '08 Recap: Stevie Wonder Knows "Barack Obama Is Going To Set This Country On Fire"

Posted about 1 year ago

Today, Republicans are making weak attempts to give Barack Obama a run for his money following the Illinois Senator and Democratic Presidential candidate's 45- minute acceptance speech that closed out the Democratic National Convention last night. It is already being called one of the greatest speeches ever made. ("In 10 years we will finally end our dependence on oil from the Middle East...I'll invest $150 billion over the next decade in affordable renewable sources of energy - wind power and solar power and the next generation of biofuels - an investment that will lead to new industries and 5 million jobs that pay well and can't be outsourced." Umm, I'm in. Where do I sign?)

Obama walked out to U2's "City Of Blinding Lights," after a moving video montage and performances by Stevie Wonder, Yonder Mountain String Band, Will.i.am and Sheryl Crow. Will.i.am with John Legend sang over Obama's "Yes We Can" speech and Wonder, along with Take 6 and the Drums of Unity performed the fitting "Fear Can't Put Dreams To Sleep," before sitting down at the keys for "Signed, Sealed, Delivered," one of Obama's campaign songs. Wonder, even changed the lyrics around singing "I know Barack Obama is going to set this country on fire. Can all the united people all over this place say Oooh Baby...Signed, Sealed, Delivered."

It just dawned on me that Barack Obama is like the Anti-Hitler.

Just hear me out.  I've heard a lot of people say that he just delivers good speeches.  But, Hitler mesmerized an entire country with grand speeches, even to the point that they ignored the fact that he wasn't blonde, didn't have blue eyes, and was possibly of Jewish descent...oh, and wasn't even German by some accounts.  So, if a great speaker can lead a people to such a sick place, I'm really anxious to see what a speaker with a positive, unifying agenda could lead us to.  Ya know?

Interesting comparison, Troy. I hope Obama wins so we can see where it goes. He's starting to look more badass to me day by day. Like, a "Don't mess with me or America because we got some rebuilding to do" badass.

wow troy... crazy thought. But I guess there's something to it. I just want something positive to come of this messy world we're in. take us in a new direction. Hopefully enought people agree and we can get things on the right (or left) track.

He can vow to invest all that money but the reality is Bush has left an incredible debt of trillions and that's going to take a long time to pay off, made worse by the crumbling economy. His promises all seem highly unrealistic, but I'm guessing we all know he's just trying to sell himself.

Obama's 'party' was impressive, but I can't help thinking important matters like politics should be taken a little more seriously.

From an outside perspective, Obama merely seems the lesser of two evils.
